Stepping up as a key voice for the opening ceremony, Ms. Joann Young, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Representative to Fiji, praised the incredible growth of the competition that is now in its third consecutive year and highlighted the successful establishment of Fiji's first-ever Agribusiness Incubation Center. She noted that this yearโ€™s competition saw an unprecedented caliber of applications, signalling a maturing agribusiness ecosystem that has warmed the hearts of regional partners and set a new benchmark for innovation in the Pacific.

Beyond the excitement of the event, Ms. Young emphasized that the European Union in the Pacific funded STODAS project represents a long-term investment in Fijiโ€™s future rather than just a one-off competition.

She reaffirmed the FAOโ€™s commitment to providing technical leadership through every stage, from system diagnostics to intensive business boot camps and ongoing mentorship.

Reaffirming that MSMEs are the backbone of the national economy, she issued a powerful call to development partners and financial institutions to deepen their investment in agri-entrepreneurs.

To the finalists, her message was clear, the FAO stands firmly behind their power to reshape Fijiโ€™s agrifood landscape, driving food security and climate resilience for generations to come.

Building on the momentum of the opening remarks from the European Union and the Ministry of Commerce and Business Development, Mrs. Kasanita Ratu, the Director Crop Development & Extension Services for the Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry Fiji shared a powerful vision for the future during the 2026 Fiji Agri-Innovate Competition showcase.

Delivering a message on behalf of the Honorable Assistant Minister Inosi Kuridrani, the Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to the Strategic Development Plan 2024โ€“2028, emphasizing a decisive shift from subsistence farming to high-yield, wealth-creating commercial agribusiness. This transition is supported by five key pillars of food security, improved rural livelihoods, sustainable practices, commercial growth, and modernized service delivery all aimed at reducing import bills and expanding Fiji's export capacity.

A central theme of the address was the necessity of climate-smart innovation and inclusive growth, particularly through the Youth and Women in Agriculture policies. By bridging the gap between scientific research and practical field applications, the Ministry aims to empower a new generation of "Agripreneurs" with the tools needed for precision farming and sophisticated agro processing.

Deep appreciation was extended to the European Union in the Pacific for the STODAS project funding, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for their technical framework, and Business Assistance Fiji (BAF) for ensuring these MSMEs have a viable corporate structure.

In her closing remarks, Mrs. Ratu encouraged the participants, stating, "To our 12 finalists, you are the pioneers proving that agriculture is a sophisticated, profitable, and vital career for Fijiโ€™s tomorrowโ€

Following the European Unionโ€™s opening remarks, the Honorable Assistant Minister for Commerce and Business Development (Ministry of Trade, Co-operatives, SMEs and Communications), Hon. Sachida Nand, delivered his keynote address at the 2026 Fiji Agri-Innovate Competition Showcase.

The highlight of his address was celebrating our incredible Top 12 Finalists, who have emerged from a rigorous business boot camp to lead Fijiโ€™s next generation of "agripreneurs."

In his remarks, Hon. Nand emphasized that agriculture in Fiji is no longer just a traditional subsistence sector, it has evolved into a dynamic platform driven by climate-smart farming, digital tools, and high-value niche markets. This transformation sits at the very heart of the MSME Strategic Plan 2025โ€“2030, which champions small businesses as the heartbeat of our economy, driving GDP growth, creating job opportunities, and closing the financial gap.

Hon. Nand also underscored the critical role of the Agri-Innovation Center under the STODAS Project which generously funded by the European Union in the Pacific with technical support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and led by Business Assistance Fiji (BAF).

He powerfully reminded the room that as a Small Island Developing State, Fiji cannot simply "copy and paste" foreign solutions. Instead, our entrepreneurs must adapt global innovations to fit our unique maritime geography, climate realities, and rich traditional knowledge systems. By focusing on reducing import dependence and building climate resilience, this competition marks a vital milestone in turning Fiji's agricultural potential into sustainable livelihood opportunities.

He concluded by congratulating the finalists, noting that their courage, innovation, and commitment are helping build a stronger, more resilient, and food-secure Fiji.
