June is Environment & Oceans Month – A Time for Action, Learning and Community Stewardship.

This June, as Fiji joins the global celebration of World Environment Day and World Oceans Day, the Suva City Council is proud to stand alongside the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and our environmental partners in promoting a cleaner, greener and more resilient future for all.

Under this year's themes, "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future" and "Reimagine: Beyond the world we know, a new relationship with our ocean," we are reminded that the health of our environment and oceans directly impacts our wellbeing, livelihoods and future generations.

The month-long programme of activities, awareness campaigns, competitions and community initiatives will officially roll out at My Suva Park, bringing together government agencies, municipal councils, schools, civil society organisations, businesses and communities in a shared commitment to environmental and ocean stewardship.

Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Sivendra Michael said Our environment and oceans are more than just our surroundings. They provide food, livelihoods, cultural identity and protection for our communities. They are part of who we are as a nation."

As we mark Environment & Oceans Month, we encourage everyone to support the Ministry's 'Do the Right Thing' campaign by reducing litter, disposing of waste responsibly, protecting waterways and caring for the natural spaces we all share.

Acting CEO and Chairman,Mr Tevita Boseiwaqa, said: "Protecting our environment begins with everyday actions. Through education, community participation and collective responsibility, we can create a cleaner and more sustainable Suva for future generations."

Together, we can inspire positive change, strengthen environmental awareness and build a city that values and protects its environment and oceans every day.

πŸ“Be part of the movement.

Lighting Communities, Building Safer Futures.

Last night, more than 300 households in Lovoni Settlement celebrated a significant milestone with the official commissioning of new solar lights by the Minister for Housing and Local Government, Hon. Maciu Katamotu Nalumisa

"This initiative is more than just lighting streetsβ€”it is about enhancing community safety, improving accessibility, and building resilience through sustainable solutions. The project reflects the shared commitment of government, partners, and residents to creating stronger and more connected communities."

Acting CEO and Chairman of the Suva City Council, Mr Tevita Boseiwaqa, said the project demonstrates Council's commitment to investing in practical, sustainable infrastructure that improves community wellbeing and supports safer, more resilient neighbourhoods.

"Together, we are lighting pathways, strengthening neighbourhoods, and investing in a brighter future for all."

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has dedicated the month of June to commemorating World Environment Day and Oceans Day, recognising the vital role our natural environment and oceans play in sustaining our communities, economy and future generations.

This year's themes, "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For our Future." and "Reimagine: Beyond the world we know, a new relationship with our ocean," remind us that protecting nature and our oceans is not just an environmental responsibility; it is an investment in our future.

Throughout June, the Ministry, along with our partners, will roll out a range of activities, competitions and community initiatives that will be officially launched on Saturday, 6 June. We encourage all Fijians to get involved and be part of the movement to protect and restore the environment we all depend on.

We acknowledge and sincerely thank our development partners, Municipal Councils, government ministries, educational institutions, civil society organisations and community groups who have joined us in taking these celebrations to the national level. Your support demonstrates that environmental and ocean stewardship is a shared responsibility.

β€œOur environment and oceans are more than just our surroundings. They provide food, livelihoods, cultural identity and protection for our communities. They are part of who we are as a nation,” Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Sivendra Michael.

As we mark Environment and Oceans Month, the Ministry's "Do the Right Thing" campaign continues to stand firm. Real environmental progress requires behavioral change. Each of us has a role to play in reducing litter, disposing of waste responsibly, protecting our waterways and respecting the natural resources that sustain us, said Dr Michael.

Together, let us be guardians of our environment and oceans, not just this month, but every day.

πŸ‡«πŸ‡― SUVA CITY COUNCIL COMMEMORATES RATU SUKUNA DAY

The Suva City Council held a Ratu Sukuna Day Commemoration at the Civic Auditorium to honour the life and legacy of Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna, one of Fiji’s most respected leaders.

Commemorating Ratu Sir Lala Vanayaliyali Sukuna (1888–1958), the programme recognised the life of a visionary Fijian chief, scholar, soldier, and statesman. Widely regarded as the forerunner of post-independence leadership in Fiji, Ratu Sukuna played an instrumental role in laying the foundation for self-governance and strengthening national institutions, including the iTaukei Land Trust Board.

Held under the theme"Ratu Sukuna-The Vision to Build,The Courage to Lead” the programme highlighted Ratu Sukuna’s contribution to leadership, education, public service, and national unity.

The Chairman of the Suva City Council-Mr Tevita Boseiwaqa said the commemoration was an important reminder of the values of service, discipline, and leadership that continues to guide communities today.

The event also featured the Suva Carnegie Library display and the Fiji Musuem timeline on the life of Fijis Statesman Ratu Sukuna, encouraging staff to support learning and service to the community.
