Battling to end both pest infestations and stigma against women in the pest control field, director of Fastkil Pest Control Services Pte Ltd, Asita Chand has won this year’s Professional Woman In Australian Pest Management Excellence Award and the South Pacific Pest Manager Of The Year, and will now be the South Pacific Representative heading the Women In Pest Management South Pacific Chapter.

With a new chapter recently launched in New Zealand, the South Pacific chapter was officially announced this week. WIPM founder and president Nicky Turner said “We’ve got three pretty powerful women now.

“I think Asita and I, we are very similar in personality, drive, passion. “We do think alike so I think together we’re quite dangerous! So there was no doubt in my mind, there’s no one else I would’ve asked. And straight away she was like ‘Yes!’

“Asita’s qualifications and what she’s done, because she can’t get the training here and she’s had to keep coming to Australia, she’s got more qualifications than most over in Australia. It just blows my mind,” Ms Turner added.

Fastkil was started in 1998 by Mrs Chand and her husband. She originally functioned as the receptionist but fell in love with the pest management career during her evenings spent helping her husband with his training and studies.

“We started with one small car, nothing flashy. And then slowly we started hiring more technicians and providing more different services,” she said.

Mrs Chand was likely the first woman in Fiji to complete her qualifications in the industry, having done them in 2012, and now boasts an impressive number of female staff at Fastkil.
