At 64, Rorosiano Kevi isn’t slowing down. He’s simply found a different way to keep going.

Originally from Levuka, Rorosiano spent 26 years working as a security officer before recently retiring. Now his days begin well before sunrise. By 5:00 am he is already walking through Valelevu, Nasinu Road, Khalsa Road, Naveiwakau and surrounding areas collecting plastic bottles and aluminium cans that others leave behind. Rain or shine, he continues this routine until around 2:00 pm each day.

For the past two years, this has become more than just a routine. It’s a steady source of income and purpose. What started small has grown over time, with Rorosiano now earning between $160 and $200 each time he returns his collections. By making more frequent visits to Return and Earn centres at the Suva City Council site on Lakeba Street and Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Fiji at Laucala Beach, he has been able to increase his earnings.

Despite this, Rorosiano lives simply with his cousin in YasiYasi, Nadera and chooses to save most of what he earns. For him, it’s about being prepared and having a little extra security for the future.

What stands out most is his humility and his quiet message to others. “This is easy money,” he says. “You just have to get past the shyness or shame of picking up bottles. Five cents might seem small but it adds up, especially now when everything is getting more expensive.”

His story is a powerful reminder that dignity comes from effort, not the type of work we do. One bottle at a time, Rorosiano is making a real difference for himself, his community and the environment.

🌱 A strong start for Return & Earn Fiji 🌱

In the first quarter of 2026 communities across Fiji returned more than 2 million beverage containers through the Return & Earn scheme a powerful signal of what’s possible when systems are simple, accessible and community‑led.

✅ $175,000 returned directly to people and communities

✅ 1.17 million PET bottles and 842,000 aluminium cans collected

✅ 100% of containers processed for export

✅ 9 Return & Earn centres operating with 6 municipal councils activated

This momentum matters. Early results show that visibility, municipal council leadership and partnership across government, industry and communities create lasting impact and confidence to keep expanding.

As we look ahead, the focus is on scaling access, activating more municipal councils and deepening community partnerships so Return & Earn continues to deliver environmental, social and economic value in our islands.

Thank you to the collectors, market vendors, schools, community and faith groups, Suva City Council Lami Town Council Lautoka City Council Sigatoka Town Council Nausori Town Council Nadi Town Council who have helped build this foundation. We’re proud of the progress and even more excited about what comes next ♻️🇫🇯 Vinaka Vaka Levu!

Meet Kena Dina Sisaro, 71, from Bua

Living in Khalsa, Kena walks through Nadera, Kinoya, Khalsa and Newtown collecting empty plastic bottles and cans and returning them for 5 cents per beverage container. He has been doing this for ten years, ever since retiring from his security job with PWD. What started as a way to stay active has become his source of income and his contribution to his family’s expenses.

Every week, he arrives at the recycling centre with his big white bags. Some weeks he brings two. Other weeks he brings up to nine. His earnings usually fall between $50 and $60, increasing with the number of bags he collects. He supports the household he shares with his two sons and grandchildren, and he does it with pride.
For Kena, this work is more than income. It keeps him fit. It keeps the roads cleaner. And it gives him purpose.

His message is simple: “Don't be ashamed to collect bottles and cans. It helps you, it helps your family, and it helps your community.”

A decade of walking, collecting and caring for the environment.

A reminder that small, consistent actions can make the biggest impact.
