Thinking of Selling Your Yacht? Here’s How to Prepare It Properly
Whether you own a sleek 10-meter sailing boat or a luxurious 40-meter motor yacht, selling your vessel isn't just about placing an ad online and waiting for the phone to ring. A well-prepared yacht sells faster, attracts better offers, and often avoids costly last-minute surprises.
Here are the essential preparations you should make before putting your yacht or boat on the market:

1. Presentation is Everything
First impressions count. Just like selling a home, a clean and well-presented boat sets the tone. That means:
• A full interior and exterior deep clean (yes, even the bilges).
• Polished stainless steel and refreshed teak decks.
• Professionally staged interiors—think cushions, throws, even flowers for photos.
• Remove personal clutter—buyers want to picture their life aboard.

2. Fix What’s Broken – Or Be Honest
Buyers will inspect everything. Sticky hatches, non-working nav lights, water-stained headliners—it all matters. If you know something’s wrong, fix it or disclose it.
Should You Get a Pre-Sale Survey?
Yes—smart sellers do. A pre-sale survey (commissioned by the owner) can be a powerful selling tool:
• It shows you’re serious and transparent.
• It gives you the opportunity to fix issues before they become deal-breakers.
• It can help you set a fair and defensible asking price.
• It builds buyer trust—especially if you can demonstrate that items flagged in the survey have already been rectified.
Just be prepared: once you commission a survey, you are morally (and in some cases legally) obligated to disclose its contents.

3. Service the Machinery
• Engines, generators, watermakers, AC systems—they should all be freshly serviced with receipts available.
• If your yacht hasn’t moved in months, take it for a proper run to ensure everything is operational.
• For sailing yachts, inspect and service rigging, winches, and sails.
A sea trial is inevitable—make sure it doesn’t end with smoke, alarms, or dead batteries.

4. Sort the Paperwork
Missing or messy documents delay or even kill deals. Get these in order:
• Builder’s certificate, registration, and proof of ownership.
• VAT/Tax status (especially important for European sales).
• Up-to-date insurance and any class or CE certification.
• Maintenance log and receipts—it shows pride of ownership.
• Inventory list—what’s included, what’s not?

5. Invest in Professional Photography & Video
This isn't a Gumtree listing. Buyers expect high-quality imagery. Use a marine photographer for:
• Exterior shots at anchor and underway.
• Interior shots with proper lighting and staging.
• Drone footage and walk-through videos for social and listings.
