Two weeks ago, hundreds of people reacted when I announced putting an end to BP Translation Conferences as we knew (and loved) them.

Now, there's a way to make BP27 happen, after all.

12-15 April: Online event with all the sessions and workshops
26-28 April: Informal meetup in Prague

Walking tours / Day trips / Meetups in small groups for 3 days

26 April (Mon) :: Joint dinner in a food court, where we'll have an area to ourselves. We'll need to pay for a welcome drink and some staff in advance (about 12€/person), then you pay for your own consumption at the various food stalls.

27 April (Tue) :: Gala dinner in a nice riverside restaurant, with set menus. To be paid in advance (about 60€/person).

28 April (Wed) :: We may have another joint dinner -- details later

With no expensive conference facilities and hotel catering to pay for, attending this informal BP27 will be much more affordable.

Six years ago, in the middle of another round of lockdown, we celebrated 30 September with an unprecedented 30-hour live event on Zoom, featuring 49 sessions in ten different languages.

I put this together in less than a month.

I've been holding back this announcement for weeks, but I have to do it. It's been an extremely difficult decision to make. In the background, the signs were telling for a few years now.

After Covid, attendance went well below pre-pandemic levels, and the last two years saw an even deeper plunge. With many colleagues leaving the profession, it's become increasingly difficult to sustain this business model that requires a huge upfront financial commitment, while hoping that ticket revenue would cover (and hopefully exceed) expenses.

Despite all the challenges, organizing BP conferences brought me great joy and satisfaction. That perhaps I was creating something valuable. A welcoming international community of bright professionals who love their profession.

Five conferences before the pandemic, five conference after. Dozens of online events. Over 200 speakers, thousands of attendees from 70+ countries. An endless number of unforgettable moments with admirable colleagues.

Thank you all.

What were your best moments/memories/takeaways/photos?

In the meantime, I started working on another project, BPmeet. Lots of great ideas. But we all know that success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration -- and at least 98% of that perspiration is still ahead of me. For now, there's only a splash screen with a signup form, but I'll be counting on you fellow translators to make it happen -- more info in a few months.

At FinLex26, Wojciech Wołoszyk will hold a workshop on AI-assisted term extraction and glossary building from large EU corpuses of official legislation.

Extraction is the cheap part. What makes a glossary usable is what happens to each candidate afterwards, and that is where an automated multi-agent pipeline does work no prompt does: it reads the whole corpus, classifies the candidates, grounds each against official legislation and case-law databases in 70+ jurisdictions, retrieves quotations in authentic wording, and runs a comparative pass before proposing an equivalent.

We work on European Court of Human Rights case-law because it is where back-translation does the most damage. The Court paraphrases national statutes and judgments in English or French, and quotes international rulings already official in your language; rendering any of it back puts wording into circulation that no legislature enacted and no court handed down. Found, not translated.

You will take candidates through four layers of context, build entries naming the source that decided them and the condition resolving a variant, and see how far the pipeline carries an entry before a human ratifies it.

Three things to take away. An entry without a source is a proposal, not a decision. The decision follows all four layers; skipping one is a legal error, not a stylistic one. Variance is legitimate; silence about variance is not.

Wojciech Wołoszyk is a lawyer-linguist with over twenty years in legal and EU translation and the author of the contextual stratification method – a four-layer framework for terminological expertise in cross-systemic disputes, validated in precedent-setting Polish case law.

He is CEO of IURIDICO Legal & Financial Translations (Gdańsk), certified to ISO 20771, and serves as an external lawyer-linguist to the Court of Justice of the European Union and the European Central Bank and as a translator for the Office of the Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court. For TransLegal he is Country Advisor for Poland on multi-jurisdictional legal-tech and legal-linguistic tools, and coordinates the team behind the Polish part of The World Law Dictionary: over 10,000 legal terms with English equivalents and notes on concepts that have no full counterpart in common law.

Court-Appointed Expert in Legal Linguistics at the Regional Courts in Warsaw and Gdańsk. He is a member of the Expert Panel of PT TEPIS and Senior Lecturer in Terminology, Specialised Translation and Language Technologies at Koszalin University of Technology. He designs AI tools for legal translation on one principle: AI encodes and enforces expert knowledge, and the terminological decision stays with the human.

At FinLex26, a regular BP attendee, Karolína Šajánková, will share her expertise in legal English in the field of family law

The work of legal translators often includes cross-border family cases, and therefore it is critical to understand legal concepts of the source/target culture. The workshop has two parts: the first part focuses on a brief intro into the UK and U.S. family law offering a solid theoretical basis followed by the second practical part with exercises, useful templates, and specific terminology.

Its target group are seasoned and beginning legal translators with English. The attendants will benefit from increased awareness of legal principles, ready-made solutions for the most frequent language challenges, and hands-on translation templates.

Karolína Šajánková is a court translator and interpreter for English, German, and Slovak with 18 years of experience. She specialises in law, business, and tourism. Her profound legal knowledge comes from many CPD courses like the BDÜ’s Summer school on German legal system, Legal English Course by Oxford Royale Academy, and the Vienna Legal Language Proficiency Exam.

Karolína believes that the AI boom will inevitably lead to urgent need of classic education. She organises regular legal English workshops at the Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra (Slovakia) and held a webinar on German and UK civil and criminal law for Arizona translators in 2023.

Venue: NH Valencia Center, with a rooftop pool that also operates in the winter, and a nice bar next to the lobby. Easy to reach from the airport and train station, a 15-minute walk to the old town.

Invite your colleagues, spread the word -- we need to have at least 120 attendees to make this work. Sign up on the website if interested.

I picked January as it's a relatively slow period in an interpreter's life. I picked Valencia as it offers a nice escape from gloomy winter days in most of Europe (although this is hard to imagine in the current heat wave).
