CMS stands for Compact Muon Solenoid: compact because it is "small" for its enormous weight, muon for one of the particles it detects, and solenoid for the coil inside its huge superconducting magnet.

This big space won't be empty for long! ✨

This is the ECAL integration area in the surface area of the CMS experiment in Cessy, France, and where all of the 36 ECAL supermodules will be moved soon for a major "makeover" during the Long Shutdown 3 💇‍♂️💅

The integration area is split into two specialized zones:
one zone is dedicated to installing and testing the new Phase-2 electronics for the photodiode readout, while the other focuses on the laser monitoring system. Additional space has also been set aside for storage 📦🚛

Twice in a million – CMS reports the first observation of a rare decay of the eta meson into two muons and two electrons, which occurs only twice in one million decays!

The CMS detector at CERN is about to go through a dramatic transformation for the High Luminosity era of the LHC!

One of the key components is the BTST, a tube that needs to be incredibly lightweight while still being very strong.

Pau Simpson studies aerospace engineering, but we need a whole range of expertise to do things that have never been done before and study aspects of particles that have never been studied before!

The similarities between this vital part of the future of CMS and a plane means that studies in one are can help in the other ✈️

The fun side of the CMS Weeks 🕹️

During the last CMS Week, the CMS Young Scientists Committee () organized its second open event at CERN for all the CMS members. CMS physicists Andrea Cardini and Maria Elena Ascioti prepared some games and trivia to bring together both junior and senior scientists.

Can you guess which group won? 🥇

Hear what these students in Italy have to say about the CMS Physics Masterclasses, created by the International Particle Physics Outreach Group (). More than 13k students in over 225 universities across 60 countries participate in this series of lectures and hands on activities.

These masterclasses give a real insight into the research being done at and students can experience a taste of what it is like to work on figuring out how the universe works!

Have you participated in a masterclass? If so, let us know your thoughts in the comments!
