At , I'll be exploring how human intuition, linguistic adaptability, and creative problem-solving help bridge language gaps in healthcare, complementing the precision required in medical texts.

We will examine best practices for handling terminology gaps, cultural adaptation, and patient-facing content while maintaining a healthy respect for accuracy. The session will highlight key skills that enhance creative medical translation, the impact of AI and translation tools, and why the human touch remains irreplaceable in breaking language barriers.

📆 World Hepatitis Day 📆

Every 30 seconds, someone dies from a viral hepatitis related illness. However, with the existing prevention, testing and treatment services that are available every hepatitis related death is preventable.

Hepatitis can affect anyone, but it has a disproportionate affect on the people and communities most underserved by health systems.

‘We’re not waiting’ is call to action for WHD 2023. It’s a call to accelerate elimination efforts of viral hepatitis now and the urgent need for testing and treatment for the real people who need it. Individuals and communities around the world are making change happen in their own lives and in world around them. is an opportunity to celebrate them, while demanding more action.

Time to switch off and unplug!

After a jam-packed few weeks, I’m taking a well-deserved holiday. It's time to relax, recharge, and enjoy some quality time away.

So for the next ten days, I'll be offline and unreachable, fully embracing the holiday spirit. It’s been a while since I disconnected completely, and I honestly can’t wait!

See you in ten days 👋

🩸 World Blood Donor Day 🩸

Today is World Blood Donor Day, a day for celebrating the incredible act of saving lives through blood donation.

Blood transfusions are crucial in various medical procedures, including surgeries, emergency care, and treating patients with chronic illnesses. This means there is an ongoing need for a steady supply of safe and compatible blood. This is where the selflessness and generosity of blood donors come into play.

Did you know that a single blood donation can potentially save up to three lives? By donating blood, you have the power to make a tangible impact on the lives of individuals in need.

As someone who spent more than one year in the UK between 1980 and 1996, I’m actually not allowed to donate blood here in France. Instead I try to make an appointment whenever I go back to the UK and support blood drives by encouraging others to donate.

So if you’ve never given blood, or your last donation was a while back, take this as a gentle reminder to make an appointment ❤️

Happy International Nurses' Day to all the amazing nurses out there!

On 12 May, we celebrate the invaluable contributions that nurses make to healthcare around the world. Did you know that nurses make up the largest group of healthcare professionals? And they do so much more than just administer medication and check vital signs. They provide comfort and support to patients and their families, advocate for better healthcare policies, and are often the first line of defense in emergencies.

So here's a big thank you to all the nurses out there for everything you do, today and every day!

Happy May Day!

I’ve always been fascinated by different traditions and customs from around the world. In English-speaking countries, May Day is often associated with dancing around the Maypole and Morris dancing, while in France it's all about the Lily of the Valley flower.

Whatever your May Day traditions may be, I hope you're enjoying the start of a new month and the promise of warmer weather ahead. If you need any medical translation services this month, don't hesitate to send me a DM!

As much as I enjoy working, I believe it's important to take a step back and enjoy life sometimes.

So as it’s the school holidays and my family are currently visiting from the UK, I’m trading my computer for some fresh air and taking some time off to spend some quality time with my loved ones.

I’ll be back next week, hopefully feeling more energised and inspired than ever 🌸

Today is World Health Day - and the World Health Organization’s 75th anniversary.

From vaccines and antibiotics to better sanitation and safer food, it’s pretty incredible to think about the progress we’ve made in improving public health over the past 75 years.

But there remain barriers to health equity. Access to quality healthcare and accurate medical information shouldn't be a privilege reserved for the few, but a basic human right that's available to all.

I know firsthand how critical it is to communicate health information accurately and effectively across language barriers - it’s my job, after all. By bridging these gaps, we can ensure that everyone, regardless of their background or where they live, has access to the same high-quality healthcare resources.

So on this World Health Day, I’m reiterating my commitment to contributing to a healthier, more equitable world for all. 💪

World TB Day is observed annually on 24 March to raise awareness about tuberculosis and efforts to end the global epidemic, marking the day in 1882 when the bacterium causing TB was discovered.

Every year, 10 million people fall ill with TB. Despite being a preventable and curable disease, 1.5 million people die from TB each year – making it the world’s top infectious killer.

Global efforts to combat TB have saved an estimated 74 million lives since the year 2000. However, the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with conflicts across Europe, Africa and the Middle East and socioeconomic inequities, has reversed years of progress made in the fight to end TB, and placed an even heavier burden on those affected, especially the most vulnerable.

One of the nuggets of wisdom I picked up many moons ago when I was an intern in a translation agency was to always underpromise and overdeliver. It’s something I’ve continued to apply throughout my career.

When it comes to medical translations, accuracy is the absolute minimum requirement. As a medical translator, I understand that the stakes are high and that any errors in translation could have serious consequences. That's why I always take the time to thoroughly research the topic at hand and ensure that my translations are not only accurate but also culturally appropriate.

But accuracy alone is not enough. I also strive to make sure that my translations are easy to read and understand. That means using plain language wherever possible and providing context when necessary.

For me, “overdelivering” also means being responsive and communicative throughout the translation process, delivering projects early if I can, and in some cases even helping to improve a source text. At the end of the day, I believe that the key to success as a freelance medical translator is to always put the client first and to consistently deliver work that exceeds their expectations. It's not always easy, but it's always worth it.

🇬🇧
International mother language day, celebrated today, was created by UNESCO to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism: "Languages are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our tangible and intangible heritage. All moves to promote the dissemination of mother tongues will serve not only to encourage linguistic diversity and multilingual education but also to develop fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue."

🇫🇷
