Driving without insurance. 🚗
The « Fonds de Garantie des Assurances Obligatoires de dommages (FGAO) » is responsible for compensating the victims. However, it then turns against the uninsured driver to reimburse these sums, which can be considerable.
Driving without insurance is punishable by a fine of up to 3,750 euros, but also by suspension or cancellation of the driving license (with a ban on retaking it), and confiscation of the vehicle.
The lack of insurance is punishable by a fixed fine of 500 euros for a first offence. In the event of a repeat offence, the penalty can be as high as a 7,500 euro fine and additional sanctions.
