What a beautiful day today! Apparently a whole week without rain 🤞🤞🤞
If the sun is shining 🌟 the likelihood of you seeing lots of 🐝 activity in your garden is high. We have noticed our resident wasps are busy as are our bees.
Unfortunately we have also seen an Asian hornet queen too, fortunately we were able to dispatch that pretty quickly, but the likelihood is there are a lot more where that came from.
What can you do?
Bees? Unless they are in your house or in a structure that you need access to please leave them bee. In fact give them a helping hand- i'll follow with another post 🐝 If they are in your house please give us a call and we will give you an honest assessment on live relocation.
Other caveats maybe if you are allergic or see them being particularly aggressive.
If you have a swarm (a big cluster of bees a bee keeper can come and collect, don't know any? Shout and I can send some over).
Please also note bees attract asian hornets :(
Wasps? Some people hate wasps, we understand. We have resident wasps on our land which we leave to it, but understand most people prefer them to be terminated. If you know where the nest(s) are this is relatively straightforward, if not we can do an assessment and determine a plan of action from there.
Hornets? European hornets are normally fairly docile until they get drunk off of rotting fruit late in the year, but they have a tendancy to like chimneys, which is a pain. We have also seen slight changes in behaviour over the past few years because of Asian hornets, so similar to bees, unless they are in the house, displaying aggressive behaviour or you are allergic they can be left to pollinate away. Remember european hornets are larger than asian hornets.
Asian hornets are now here to stay, unfortunately. They are wreaking havoc on bee colony's, changing behaviour of our bees, wasps and hornets. They are opportunists and will nest where they can - used to be up high but we have found them in old oil tanks, garden sheds, vans - anywhere. If we can kill queens in the spring then the less nests we have in the summer. Even small nests are problematic. If you have an Asian hornet nest - call us (or your local pest controller) asap.
