๐Ÿ“ข Phileo by Lesaffre attended The Aquaculture Round Table Series in Bali, Indonesia from August 16th to 17th, 2023. It was a good opportunity to catch up with actors, partners and friends of the and get a sense of where it is headed in these challenging times. Here are some of our own takeaways of these two productive days:

๐ŸŒ Market distribution is undergoing a significant shift. China is emerging as both the largest consumer and importer of shrimp since this year. The increasing demand from local Asian markets will likely exacerbate Ecuadorโ€™s growing prominence in global shrimp exports which, together with India, accounts presently for nearly half of the worldโ€™s production of L. vannamei shrimp. In this context, South-East Asian producers will need to identify their own strategy within this dynamic market to continue making substantial contributions.

๐Ÿฆ Production keeps intensifying in response to the growing market demand, land and water constraints โ€“ though large differences are observed between regions. This was done in some cases without reducing production costs, putting the industry at risk of the ups and downs of the market. This has become even more apparent in the current context of inflation and high raw material prices which highlights the importance of finding innovative solutions to improve efficiency.

โš• Mortality remains a critical factor influencing production costs, dictating the difference between profit and loss for shrimp farmers. While there are no magical solutions, sticking to some fundamental practices such as employing stocking densities in adequation with carrying capacity, to minimize stress in production ponds, are essential in our perspective.

Here are the objectives :

๐Ÿ“ˆForage education: Last month, Elia Gounot trainee from L'Institut Agro Montpellier, presented the last results of forage analyses to vet assistants and community farmers of the chiefdom of Musungwa

๐ŸŒง๏ธ Forage database: the most consumed forages were sampled during the late raining season and sent to The Farm Phileo in France for analysis

๐Ÿ„ Feed digestibility: fresh dung from different dairy herds were sieved using method

Since 2018, Dr.Ralph K. Rosenbaum is head of the research program Sustainability in Biosystems at the Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology (IRTA) in Spain. His core expertise is the development and application of quantitative sustainability assessment tools for decision support for companies (sustainability strategy, ecodesign), consumers (ecolabeling) and public policies (territorial assessments). ๐ŸŒฑ
