When is it going to stop? When are we going to act?
Across Europe, wildfires are becoming more frequent, more intense, and more destructive. Every year, we witness the loss of forests, the destruction of homes and infrastructure, the displacement of communities, and the devastating impact on our natural environment.
These events are no longer isolated disasters. They are part of a growing and systemic crisis that threatens environmental security, public safety, rural communities, and the future of Europe's landscapes.
The images and stories coming from wildfire-affected regions show us the reality of this crisis: damaged infrastructure, overwhelmed emergency services, destroyed ecosystems, and families forced to leave their homes. We cannot continue to respond only after the damage has already been done.
It is no longer enough to rely on reactive firefighting once a fire has started. As droughts become longer and weather conditions become increasingly unpredictable, we must fundamentally change the way we approach wildfire prevention and rural land management.
The European Fire Prevention & Rural Preservation Organization (EFPRP) believes that effective wildfire mitigation must begin long before the first flames appear. Prevention, preparation, and long-term environmental stewardship must become central to how we protect our communities and natural landscapes.
This means investing in better monitoring systems and predictive tools that can identify areas at high risk before conditions become critical. It means actively managing rural landscapes through controlled grazing, the removal of excess combustible vegetation, and the strategic creation and maintenance of firebreaks. These measures can help slow the spread of wildfires and provide communities and emergency services with valuable time to respond.
