What to expect at your first Toastmasters meeting?

📋 There will be a very detailed agenda with timings
👩‍🏫 Nearly everyone will have a clear role - timekeeper, evaluator, grammarian
💬 First you'll see the improvised speeches and then the prepared speeches
💯 After the break, the speeches will be evaluated
🏅 We vote for the winning improvisation, speech and evaluation

And very importantly:
🗣️ You don't have to speak, unless you would like to try an improvisation
🇬🇧🇫🇷 As we are a bilingual club, everyone can choose to speak English or French

Maybe you can't imagine feeling comfortable making a speech in front of an audience, let alone entering a speech competition.

Toastmasters Sophia-Antipolis is here to tell you that it's amazing how much confidence you can gain in public speaking by joining our group and who knows, you might end up winning a speech competition!

Last Saturday was the area competition, with the 4 clubs of the Cote d'Azur: Toastmasters Nice Toastmasters Nice Eloquence, and Toastmasters Cote d'Azur competing in 4 categories: International speech (in English), French speech, English and French tall tales.

Congratulations to our two competitors: Guy Di Fulvio who came 3rd in the French speech competition, and Catherine Aygen who came 1st in the international speech.

Catherine will be going to the next stage in Lyon along with the other winners and runners up.

Nous sommes un club bilingue français/anglais.

Cela peut vous effrayer, mais laissez-moi vous expliquer pourquoi il ne faut pas s'inquiéter.

Nous accueillons tous les anglophones et francophones - vous n'avez pas besoin d'avoir un excellent niveau dans les deux langues. Nous avons des membres qui parlent très peu français et d'autres qui parlent très peu anglais.

Lors des réunions, vous pouvez choisir votre langue. Certaines réunions sont moitié-moitié, d'autres sont plus en anglais, d'autres encore sont plus en français, cela dépend simplement des personnes présentes ce soir-là.

Et le gros avantage ? Notre club est très diversifié et international : nous avons des membres originaires de France, du Royaume-Uni, du Kenya, d'Inde, de Colombie, du Moyen-Orient... Venez nous rejoindre pour notre prochaine réunion le mercredi 4 février !

🇬🇧 We are a bilingual club.

But what does that mean exactly?

For us, it means that you can choose to speak English or French, as you wish.

For example, you can choose to do any of your speeches in either language. If you evaluate someone else's speech, you usually try and do it in the same language as their speech.

If you're doing a role - timer, Toastmaster of the evening, general evaluator for example - it's up to you.

And some roles are specifically French or English: if you are the grammarian, you'll either be the French or the English grammarian.

And you don't need to be fluent in both languages to join us: we have members who speak a little French and some who speak very little English.

Just come and enjoy yourself, in any language!

Mais qu'est-ce que ça veut dire exactement ?

Pour nous, ça veut dire que tu peux choisir de parler anglais ou français, comme tu veux.

Par exemple, tu peux choisir de faire n'importe lequel de tes discours dans l'une ou l'autre langue. Si tu évalues le discours de quelqu'un d'autre, tu essaies généralement de le faire dans la même langue que son discours.

Si tu as un rôle à jouer (chronométreur, Toastmaster de la soirée, évaluateur général, par exemple), c'est à toi de décider.

Certains rôles sont spécifiquement français ou anglais : si tu es grammairien, tu seras soit grammairien français, soit grammairien anglais.

Et tu n'as pas besoin de parler couramment les deux langues pour nous rejoindre : nous avons des membres qui parlent un peu français et d'autres qui parlent très peu anglais.

Viens simplement t'amuser, dans n'importe quelle langue !

Toastmasters ne consiste pas seulement à préparer de beaux discours.

Il s'agit également d'être capable de s'exprimer de manière cohérente et captivante sans préparation, et de donner des feedbacks constructifs.

Vous acquérez également de l'expérience dans d'autres rôles : animateur de soirée par exemple, ce que Carole a fait avec brio pour la première fois la semaine dernière.

(Et bravo à Akash qui a gagné non seulement la meilleure improvisation mais aussi la meilleure évaluation 👏)
