The French formal letter cheat sheet đŸ‡«đŸ‡·
Save this before your next préfecture, landlord or notaire letter.

👉Start with :
✅ Madame, Monsieur,
✅ Maütre, (notaires & lawyers)
✅ À qui de droit, (complaints, references, unknown reader)
❌ Cher Monsieur (too casual)

👉 The rule everyone is forgetting :
Whatever title you open with must reappear word for word in your closing.
Open Madame, Monsieur, → close Madame, Monsieur,
Open Maütre, → close Maütre,

👉 Useful phrases to keep :
Je me permets de vous contacter au sujet de

Suite à notre échange du [date], je

Je vous prie de bien vouloir m’adresser

Je vous serais reconnaissant·e de bien vouloir

Je reste à votre disposition pour tout renseignement complémentaire.

And the usual traps :
❌ SVP (never in formal writing)
❌ Cordialement (emails only, never letters)
❌ Sentiments to a woman you don’t know (use salutations)
❌ Forgetting objet: and the date at the top
❌ Signing with only your first name

👉 How to finish the letter :
Je vous prie d’agrĂ©er, Madame, Monsieur, l’expression de mes salutations distinguĂ©es.
Dans l’attente de votre rĂ©ponse, je vous prie d’agrĂ©er, Madame, Monsieur, l’expression de mes salutations distinguĂ©es.
Veuillez agrĂ©er, MaĂźtre, l’expression de mes respectueuses salutations. (Notaire or lawyer)
Je vous prie d’agrĂ©er l’expression de mes salutations distinguĂ©es. (For À qui de droit)
Je vous prie de croire, Madame, Monsieur, en l’expression de mes sentiments distinguĂ©s. (PrĂ©fet, ministre, hierarchy)

Save it 💛 You’ll need it sooner than you think.

What happens if you forget to declare your taxes? đŸ“‘â—ïž

📍Many expatriates in France underestimate the importance of filing an annual income tax return.

Even where no income tax is ultimately payable, or tax has already been withheld at source, the obligation to declare may still apply.

So what does it mean in reality? 👇
Failing to file will have consequences. From a practical perspective, you may be left without an avis d’impît, a document that is frequently requested in France as evidence of residence, financial situation, and administrative regularity.

There may also be financial penalties. A late income tax return can result in a 10% surcharge, rising to 20% or 40% depending on the circumstances, and up to 80% in cases involving concealed activity. Late-payment interest may also be added.

For expatriates with long-term plans in France, this is particularly important.
Tax and non-tax notices are commonly required for major administrative procedures, and they form part of the supporting documentation for a French nationality application.

The essential point 👉 having no income tax to pay is not the same as having no obligation to file.

Season has started! Make sure you do it earlier, rather than later ! 😄

Save this post to not be blocked by the prefecture ! đŸ‘‡âš ïž

đŸ˜„ If you are facing serious problems with a public administration in France, including residence permit issues, the DĂ©fenseur des droits can be a very useful option.
👉It is a free, independent public body that helps people defend their rights. They can step in when an administration is failing to properly handle your case.

For expats, this may help if your titre de séjour renewal is stuck for months without explanation, your file is not being processed, or you are being denied access to a service despite having the required documents. The Défenseur des droits will first check whether your case falls within its legal missions. If it does, they review the situation and often try mediation. If it does not, they still reply and redirect you to the right body.

⭐ How to contact them?
- Online, by phone, by post, or in-person appointment
- Local delegates across France + experts in Paris

Knowing which resource to use (and when) is the hard part.
That’s why Expalys is here to be your guide on this path.

AI translates words. Not responsibility đŸ€–đŸ‘‡

There’s a difference between translation and sworn translation — and when you’re going through immigration paperwork, court documents, or official certificates in a foreign country, that difference matters enormously.

👉📖 A sworn translator doesn’t just convert your words. They certify their legal meaning. They put their professional name and stamp on the document, taking full responsibility for its accuracy in the eyes of the law.

đŸ€ Natasha has built her practice around exactly this — helping people who are building lives across borders, in four languages.
