During ArtRio 2026, three international voices shared with SSAA, firsthand, their perspectives on Brazilian art and its growing presence on the global stage.

John Muhlenberg Basnage de Beauval, member of Tate Modern’s Africa Acquisitions Committee; Scott Stover, advisor and patron based between Los Angeles and Paris; and Will Palley, patron, advisor and member of acquisition committees at MoMA and Tate, were in Rio for an immersion in the Brazilian art scene.

In exclusive conversations with SSAA, they reflected on the artists and encounters that stood out to them, the connections between Brazil, Africa and the international art world, the role of collectors and institutions, and the paths toward expanding the presence of Brazilian artists in international collections and exhibitions.

From Agrade Camíz, Márcia Falcão and Tadáskía to Lygia Clark, Lygia Pape and Maria Martins, their perspectives reveal a scene being recognized not only for its history, but also for the new generations, languages and dialogues shaping it today.

During ArtRio 2026, we had the opportunity to speak with three women who are looking at Brazilian art from distinct international perspectives.

The interviews took place in the context of the Art Immersion Trip, a program by Latitude — Platform for Brazilian Art Galleries Abroad, which brings international curators, collectors, and art professionals to Brazil for an immersive experience within the local art ecosystem, connecting them with artists, galleries, institutions, and different artistic scenes across the country.

In this first part of Curators on Brazil, Rebecca Lowery, Melissa Blanchflower, and Jacintha Legorreta share their impressions of what they encountered in Rio, from the relationship between art, nature, and territory to connections between Brazil, the United States, and Mexico, as well as the visibility of women artists and the potential for new institutional collaborations.

An outside perspective that helps reveal how Brazilian art is being perceived internationally and what new dialogues may emerge from these encounters.

Three women, three perspectives on the Brazilian art scene.

During ArtRio 2026, in partnership with Latitude, we had the opportunity to speak with three international voices whose work connects institutions, artists, collectors and new narratives across the art world.

Melissa Blanchflower, Senior Curator at Turner Contemporary, previously spent eight years at Serpentine and has developed exhibitions and projects with artists including Beatriz Milhazes, Bridget Riley, Mark Leckey and Anya Gallaccio.

Rebecca Lowery, Curator of Exhibitions at the Wexner Center for the Arts, built her curatorial career across institutions including MOCA Los Angeles, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and NYU’s Grey Art Gallery, working on major exhibitions spanning different generations and practices.

Jacintha Regoletta, art advisor and co-founder of MALA, Mujeres Artistas Latinoamericanas, brings a perspective closely connected to collecting, advocacy and the growing visibility of women artists from Latin America.

From the artists who caught their attention to the perspectives they are taking home, we invited them to share what stood out during their immersion in Rio.

The Collection Lambert in Avignon was born from the vision of Yvon Lambert, a pioneering gallerist and collector who, from the 1960s onward, played a key role in bringing some of the most radical artistic voices of his time to France. By 1972, he was championing American Conceptual, Minimal and Land Art, placing them in dialogue with leading European artists.

In the 1980s, Lambert embraced a new generation working across painting, photography and video, supporting artists who would go on to define contemporary art. His extraordinary journey as a collector and gallerist found a new home with the opening of the Collection Lambert in Avignon in 2000.

Built through close relationships with artists and a sharp awareness of the transformations shaping contemporary art, the collection opened to the public in 2000. In 2012, Lambert donated 556 works to the French State, becoming one of the most significant donations made to France in over a century.

Today, the institution continues to reflect Lambert’s vision: collecting is also about building relationships, capturing the spirit of an era, and transmitting that perspective to future generations.

At the Biennale de Bonifacio, Nimu Dormi — Nobody Sleeps explores celebration as a space of freedom, resistance, and collective transformation.

In Manikongo, filmed in Bahia, Puma Camillê brings Candomblé, capoeira, and voguing into dialogue, weaving together the body, spirituality, memory, and rebellion.

Through dance and community, celebration becomes an act of survival and a way of imagining new forms of being together.

The work also references Xica Manicongo, who was born in the Congo around 1600 and is now regarded as a symbolic figure in Afro-Brazilian LGBTQIA+ struggles.
