‼️Humanitarian archives are disappearing, and most of us don't notice until it's too late‼️

As organisations restructure, budgets shrink, and digital infrastructure fails, decades of operational knowledge, beneficiary records, protection documentation, and institutional memory are being lost, often without any decision ever being made.

The Humanitarian Archive Emergency (HAE) project led by HCRInstitute - university of manchester with Elrha is building an evidence base on the scale, nature, and consequences of archival risk in the sector.

To this end, we, at Key Aid Consulting, Institute of Development Studies and the Archives & Digital Media Lab, are conducting a 5 minute global discovery survey to surface archives, records, and datasets that are not visible in existing repositories or formal initiatives, with particular attention to informal, decentralised, and locally held collections, especially in low and middle-income countries.

If you manage, know of, or have worked with humanitarian collections that could be at risk or simply overlooked, we want to hear from you. The survey takes around 5 minutes.

Entries can remain confidential where collections are sensitive or politically delicate.

In one of our latest video, Ciara explains why data responsibility matters in our field, and how we can better protect them:

🔒 Data collection and personal information: behind every piece of personal data that we collect through our evaluation work, there is a person. Most of the time crisis affected and vulnerable people. We have the duty to ensure their data is not exploited or at risk.

✅ General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR): as we are based in France, our work follows the EU GDPR. To ensure compliance with this law, Key Aid has developed its own data protection policy that explains our practices.

As the humanitarian sector is currently facing an unprecedented crisis, utility-focus evaluation and research, demonstrating the impact of aid, can be a powerful tool.
Difficult choices are lying ahead, and research can give an echo chamber to the voices of crisis affected households, so their choices drive prioritisation.
Research and evaluation further allow evidence-informed and considered decision making.

At Key Aid, we are delivering services for humanitarian organisations to improve the quality of assistance and are committed to continue doing so. To bring a small contribution supporting our network, we are keen to make our training more accessible, especially to those who are facing uncertainty in their career lately.

The narrative around CVA deserves to be spread as a form of aid that promotes dignity and freedom of choice.
