Drew Gowland began his professional career as an actor and singer having completed his post-graduate studies at The Royal Academy of Music, London and his undergraduate degree at The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (BSSD) and the College of Visual and Performing Arts in the USA. Drew then continued his education and training in strategic leadership and management throughout his military service wit

h the Royal Air Force. His career as performer spanned eleven years including London’s West End, across the UK and eight different cruise ships across the fleets of Seabourn, Cunard, Celebrity and P&O between 2003 and 2014. In 2005 Drew founded The MGA Academy of Performing Arts (www.themgaacademy.com) developing his expertise in the education and training sector and Network Artist Management (www.networkartistmanagement.com) working in the field of talent development and management. For 15 years he was the Managing Director (CEO) of The MGA Academy, building Scotland’s largest independent CDMT accredited drama school, offering undergraduate degree programmes. Network Artist Management is now recognised as one of Scotland’s leading talent, artist management and casting agencies working internationally. Whilst building his own companies and forming world-class teams within the creative arts and entertainments industries, Drew has maintained his passion for the cruise industry and continues to dedicate most of his time to pursuing his career at sea. Looking back, in 2008 Drew became P&O’s theatre company manager for the Aurora World Cruise and subsequently continued his management roles onboard until making the move from performer to cruise directing within the ultra-luxury arena for Seabourn in 2016. He remained with Seabourn until 2022, working across their activities from regular scheduled cruises to high profile charters. Drew most recently worked alongside their director of entertainment, Handré Potgeiter for the 2020 world cruise and was invited to re-launch the Seabourn Quest upon its return to service in 2022. Drew has been a serving member of the UK’s Armed Forces since 2012 and continues his service alongside his civilian career. He was originally a Royal Air Force Regiment Gunner and is now a Corporal for the Royal Air Force Police.

TURNING AN IDEA INTO A REALITY: FROM PEN TO PAPER TO…

Twenty-two years of delivering entertainment, experiences and events.

My most recent project and two-and-half year tenure at Explora Journeys draws to a close this month. It is with immeasurable enjoyment that I look back over my time in Geneva, Switzerland. Most importantly I take with me a great many new friends.

It is also with pride that I watch the corporate and shipboard entertainment teams that we designed, recruited and nurtured continue to flourish in their roles. I am excited for the opportunities they will have as the onboard offering evolves under the guidance and resources of the MSC Cruises entertainment department. From product development to operation - it is now time to leave the team to carry the torch, and I do so with a smile.

The greatest asset to any individual is the team that works with them. The team that grew around me over the last two years was nothing short of remarkable and so I hold tight to my management and leadership principals:

- Surround yourself with people you trust, who also trust your guidance, but who are fundamentally more capable at what they do than you.

- Then celebrate their successes and elevate their positions.

- Finally, let them get on with their jobs. It is a special breed of fool who thinks themselves the cleverest and most experienced in the room!

The design, production and delivery of entertainment, experiences and enrichment for the guests onboard luxury ships and yachts is a completely unique challenge. The complexities of the Travel, Tourism, Hospitality and Entertainment sectors need to be aligned and function in harmony with the realities of ship architecture and the stringent operating parameters set by the maritime industry.

Luckily, the challenge is a thrill to me and the team at The International Entertainment Collective.

LEAD WITH CONSTRUCTIVENESS & COMPASSION: SOLDIERS OR DANCERS - IT’S ALL THE SAME.

I was asked for some advice this week and it got me thinking… Self-doubt is not only the enemy of - it is the enemy of .

It causes us to settle for less than we deserve and to hesitate in making the right next step. It makes us question our relationships and capabilities and our worth.

As a leader you should never do anything to make your team doubt themselves and as individuals we all need to know and believe in our individual value.

Who is out-and-about and wants to connect over the coming week?

Connections are everything for me - to people, places, products and brands. If you connect with something in some way, it travels with you forever. For that reason i can’t always stay behind a desk, disconnected from the real world and unable to experience new things.

Explora Journeys : An unparalleled success story. As we look towards the launch of Explora II and the development of product on Explora I, we know the importance of meeting our guest expectations whilst staying true to us, as a brand. We have to look outwards as well as inwards. Working with MSC Cruises and Steve Leatham to redefine the entertainment brand offering to continue to meet our evolving guest expectations is going to be enlightening and invigorating. There is no better team to deliver the future of and .

The Entertainment : Sometimes the greatest opportunities and finest quality of work comes to fruition through the meeting of strangers who then become colleagues who you subsequently call friends.

CONNECTION IS EVERYTHING: BE KIND, CAPABLE & CAN-DO!

Very much looking forward to re-connecting with all the incredibly capable and wonderfully kind individuals and companies that make up the and associated , and sector. And of course, all my colleagues from Explora Journeys in the USA this week.

people are awesome to spend time with and make great friends but if they are not very capable they make terrible work colleagues! people might be awesome at what they do but too often they are full of insecurity, greed, jealously and arrogance.

It will be spectacular next month to re-connect with all those in the cruise industry that I count as both AND some of the most capable people in the world to work with.

And if I know , it will also be the opportunity to meet thousands more kind, and capable people with can-do attitudes - that's just what the Cruise Industry is made of.

CREATE, DELIVER, LISTEN, DEVELOP: AND THEN DELIVER AGAIN!

My team at Explora Journeys continues to amaze me. I am in awe of each of their individual talents, dedication, work ethics and sense of fun.

After over two years of hard work we now approach a year of sailing with EXPLORA I. A year since we launched a new brand and with it a new concept of onboard entertainment, enrichment and events.

Watching this new groundbreaking offering receive exceptional feedback from guests new-to-cruise and, on occasion, a less favourable reception from those with a long line of cruise credits has been an education. I am so grateful for the experience.

Expectations – that is the key here. Though I knew the importance of managing expectations, this process has firmly placed that single element of the human experience at a focal point for all my future professional and personal endeavours.

"What is being expected from you or from your product?"

If what is being expected is not what you plan to deliver, you have two options - ONE: change what you offer to meet those requirements or TWO: change the expectations before delivery.

Building a new brand with new customers requires us all to take these two options and consider them both fully. Over the last three months I have watched as our incredible offering of onboard experiences has settled, developed, adapted and grown as the team consider and action options presented by both responses.

It is incredible to watch as each week take a steps closer to our goal of fully satisfying the traditionalists whilst being true to our vision of the future on onboard entertainment.

What an exhilarating process and what a privilege to lead the team responsible for the outstanding work at Explora journeys.

TEAM BUILDING: SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE MORE CAPABLE THAN YOU!

I see many leaders who are so insecure that they surround themselves with people they can control, bully, and overpower. It’s so easy to feel special around people with less experience who fear you.

One thing that has been true of every team I have ever been on – if I had been the most capable person in the room we would not have succeeded in our endeavors!

I ask only one thing of people who join my team – that they trust me enough to guide them in the right direction towards the right set of goals.

How we, as a team, achieve those goals is up to the collective. I leave this entirely in their hands and their special skills, unique perspectives and their own individual style.

THE NEXT GENERATION: The cast of by The Beyond Broadway Experience quite literally took my breath away on opening night at The Festival Theatre (Capital Theatres, Edinburgh). Over the last two weeks they worked tirelessly and under great pressure to deliver something remarkable.

Supporting and guiding young people in the performing arts has always been Murray Grant’s and my calling. Returning to our home city of Edinburgh each year (taking time away from our own professional careers) to produce, direct and chorograph The Beyond Broadway Experience is a gift to us. It’s our annual chance to return to the training environment and give something back for all the support we have received over the years.

It is the best two weeks of the year.

TEAM IS COMING TOGETHER: So much talent, energy, personality and diversity in one place. It’s breathtaking.

18-months of reflection, conversation, creativity and some really hard work has allowed us to arrive at our first ever . And we have arrived with a set of world-class activations to prepare for our guests entertainement and enrichment onboard Explora Journeys.

Taking the lead developing this new entertainement and enrichment concept has become a source of true inspiration for me. Building the corporate and creative team has become a source of real pride for me - professionally and personally.

Partnering with Charly McDonald and Spark Cooperative to deliver on our promise to the future and onboard has made the journey thus far a real pleasure. We would not be here without them. If only Jason Gelineau could be here to witness this moment.

So many others have helped shape my own outlook and our direction of travel. Not least Steinway & Sons, Ryan Stana and Craig Laurie at RWS Entertainment Group. Steve Leatham at MSC Cruises , Chris Jurasas 🇱🇹 and Dominique Bennett 🇵🇱 at Greystone Creative and Belinda King and Camilla King at Belinda King Creative Productions and of course the incomparable Zoe Tyler International. I’m forever thankful.

To Murray Gran and Simon Hanson - I would not be here without you.

But more than anything, I truly believe that laughter is the key. Working with people who encourage you, are truthful with you and who allow you to be yourself with joy and humour. People who will also say NO to you! Luke Murgatroyd, Geoff DeVito and Aleksandar Brajovic have become exceptional at saying no when required!

To one and all today - as the pace picks up, the pressure increases and deadlines approach I want us to hold onto two things - the fun and the laughter. They will see us successfully through to the finish line with our sanity and a whole pile of new friendships.
