change the face of leadership. Organizations need a powerful leadership response
While the pace and extent of change in fields such as communication, military, technology transportation and other areas, have improved exponentially in the past few decades, leadership assumptions, education paradigms and organisational structures have remained passably the same. Yet organizations need to address the tough questions facing our world, and have the courage, conviction and determination to make the transformative change required to go beyond business-as-usual. The business models and management approaches that served us well in the past are no longer fit for purpose in a context where dynamic change is the new norm, and where sustainability is neither about looking good in an annual report, nor about nature, science or ideology. Sustainability is unquestionably about people, and the choices they make
Effective sustainability is about people-driven benefits and values and the answer for change does not lie in traditional and conventional forms of leadership. It can only come from the courage to embrace new ways of dealing with the pressing short-term issues of today and a new interpretation of both factual and emotional data. Organizations and individuals standing any chance of meaningfully embedding sustainability policies and principles into business practices and performance must invest in integrating sustainability into the mainstream leadership and management programs. Organizations where multiple forms of values - financial, but also social and emotional values – co-exist, are those where leaders believe this approach is the only way to create a healthy organizational ecosystem, one which brings all stakeholders together in mutual cooperation and not against each other.
