To better reflect the full range of continuing resources covered by ISO 3297, the MARC Advisory Committee (MAC) approved in January 2021 a proposal submitted by the ISSN Network's ISSN Review Group to expand the coding of continuous resources. The update revised three existing code definitions and introduced six new resource types. Corresponding changes were subsequently incorporated into UNIMARC and officially published in both formats later that year.

With the launch of ISSN+ in June 2022, these enhanced resource-type codes were adopted across the ISSN Network, enabling more precise identification and analysis of continuing publications. The 2025 statistics presented here illustrate the diversity of resource types now captured through this expanded classification framework.
