Do you want to know how Romain felt during his 0-gravity flight? Here's an excerpt of the interview after the flight:

- Tell me more about your experience
"Before everything started, I was really nervous (and excited) about what was coming. The briefing team goes through every single detail of the flight but they can’t explain the feeling and sensations.

The acceleration (hyper gravity) feels very strange as you feel twice the gravity on you. It shakes your head a bit and we were told to lay down and keep the head fixed to avoid being dazzled. But when injection hits (the pilot signal of the beginning of the parabola) something unbelievable happens. Your weight disappears instantly and you are free from gravity! It is a bit like in a roller coster, your tummy tickles for a few seconds but then you just float in air, free.

Everyone is happy and you can only see smiley faces around you! We don’t know each other, but we all share this unique experience. It’s like being kids again, having fun without thinking about anything else but having fun.

It is literally sensational! All part of the flight are enjoyable, hyper gravity, Mars and Moon gravity, and the 0g. It’s just wonderful!

I spent a lot of time sitting at the ceiling, looking at people having fun. It’s amazing how the brain reacts to this! I knew I was upside down, but could not feel it. And even with everything upside down (or technically, just me), everything felt normal!

And when the parabola ends, gravity comes back (from 0 to 1.8g in a second) so, better be in the right position! You can hear the sound of people falling on the mats as we go back to gravity, it’s quite funny!

The crew has a lot of activities planned as well, to make sure we enjoy the experience to the fullest! The organisation is perfect and the flight goes by really smoothly, and quickly!"

Do you want to know how Romain felt before his 0-gravity flight? Here's an excerpt of the pre-flight interview:

How are you feeling? Are you excited to fly in zero gravity aircraft?
What do you expect from the flight?

"I don’t think I fully realise yet what is going to happen! I feel a bit excited, but I am not sure what to expect. I have voluntarily avoided watching too many videos not to be spoiled and I don’t know anyone who’s ever done this before so this is all a mystery for me. But I know it’s going to be memorable in many ways, so I am very much looking forward to it!"

Here is an excerpt from the interview with Romain Esteve before experiencing the zero-gravity flight:

- How did you come up with the project with which you participated in the award?
"We had a few long discussions with my partners and initially, we were interested in Earth Observation and precision agriculture. But as one of the key requirements for the project is its innovative concept we thought we would look like into something even more niche. This is when my colleague Ariane started thinking about Bees. After a lot of reading about bees and farmings, we realised pollination services were sub-optimal and started building the project around this."

- What did winning the Space for Sustainability Award meant to you?
"There are a few meanings to this win. First, there is feeling of pride. We knew this was a competition and would be a tough one given the previous edition winners and winning meant we were now part of this. This filled us with pride! Second, there is a sensation of hope. No day passes without hearing about the environment being destroyed but winning awards with the idea of protecting bees and ecosystem means this resonates (at least to some people). We still hope one day this concept could become reality! Finally, it also means we have achieved something big with a lot of work. It is extremely motivating and gives us a lot of determination to fight and work for what we believe in."

Self-cremating Satellite was the special mention of the jury winner, proposed by Esha. It consists of a deorbiting device that uses existing membranes of the satellite to increase drag forces through a dedicated mechanism. It also exposes the satellite structure to a harsh space environment, which degrades it eventually.

Do you want to know what the award-winning experience was like for Simon Vilms Pedersen, winner of the Space for Sustainability Award?

“It was a great experience, which has fuelled a lot of great events later on in my career. I have later done a lot of talks; I have had a meeting with the ESA BIC in Denmark and received multiple fellowships for my postdoctoral studies”.

Simon was the creator of the AnthroAm Sentinel project, which consists of a European space initiative to mitigate ammonia pollutant emissions.

Do you know what AnthroAm Sentinel is?

AnthroAm Sentinel was a Space for Sustainability Award winning idea. The project consists of a European space initiative to mitigate ammonia pollutant emissions.
This is done by collecting information on atmospheric spectral footprint and reflectance spectra from the Copernicus Earth Observation satellites and using this data to provide farmers with fertilisers tailored to their agricultural land.
