On **Thursday 3 September**, Geoff will be opening a few bottles at Château Maine Gazin and inviting you to join him for a relaxed live tasting and Q&A.

No formal wine lesson. No need to know all the right wine words.

Before moving to Bordeaux, we’d spent years farming vineyards in Western Australia.

One of the biggest surprises?

In Bordeaux, you can’t irrigate the vines.

You’re completely at the mercy of the season.

Some years are generous.

Others test every decision you make.

It’s challenging, but it’s also what gives each vintage its own character.

After all, great wine doesn’t come from controlling nature.

It comes from working with it.

Why do we farm organically?

Because it’s how we believe this vineyard should be cared for.

Farming organically in Bordeaux isn’t the easy option. It means more work, more uncertainty, and more challenges—especially when nature has other plans.

But when we left Australia to rebuild a vineyard in France, we wanted to do things the right way.

Organic farming wasn’t about following a trend.

It was about respecting the land that’s now in our care.

Great wine begins in the vineyard, and every decision we make starts there.

That’s why we farm organically. 🌿🍷

Why doesn’t Bordeaux usually make single-varietal wines?

Because Bordeaux has always been built around blending.

Different grape varieties bring different qualities to the wine.

Merlot can add softness and generosity.
Cabernet Franc can bring freshness and fragrance.
Petit Verdot can add colour, structure and spice.

On their own, each grape has something to offer.
Together, they can create a wine with more balance, depth and character.

Blending also gives winemakers room to respond to each vintage, because no two growing seasons in Bordeaux are quite the same.

It isn’t about hiding the grapes.

It’s about helping each one play its best part.

That said, we’ve never believed tradition should stop you from exploring.

When our Petit Verdot proved exceptional, we bottled it on its own.

Sometimes the blend tells the best story.
Sometimes one grape deserves the whole stage. 🍷

Left Bank or Right Bank… what’s the difference? 🍷

Think of it like two sides of the same story.

👉 **Left Bank** wines are usually Cabernet Sauvignon-led, giving you structure, firm tannins and great ageing potential.

👉 **Right Bank** wines lean on Merlot, making them softer, rounder and beautifully generous from a younger age.

Neither is “better”—it’s simply about the style you enjoy.

The best part? Once you know the difference, choosing Bordeaux becomes a whole lot easier.

Why are we out spraying the vines at 8pm?

Because that’s when the bees have finished foraging. 🐝

One of the realities of farming organically is that timing matters. Every decision in the vineyard is made with the health of the ecosystem in mind—not just the vines, but the wildlife that calls it home too.

By waiting until the evening, we can carry out the work the vineyard needs while helping to protect one of nature’s most important workers.

Organic farming has never been the easiest path. It takes more planning, more patience, and often a few late evenings.

But we’ve always believed that looking after the vineyard means looking after everything that lives in it.

Sometimes that means working while everyone else is heading in for dinner.

And we’re perfectly happy with that.

Most Bordeaux producers are known for blends.

So are we.

But we also do something a little unusual.

Alongside our Bordeaux blends, we produce single-varietal Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot wines—two varieties more commonly found playing supporting roles in Bordeaux.

Why?

Because over the years, these grapes kept capturing our attention.

Cabernet Franc brings freshness, fragrance and elegance.

Petit Verdot brings depth, structure and character.

And in the right season, they have enough personality to stand confidently on their own.

It’s not about challenging Bordeaux tradition.

It’s about exploring what our vineyard can express at its best.

The result is a collection of wines that are unmistakably Bordeaux, while offering something you don’t often encounter in the region.

Where should someone start when discovering Bordeaux? 🍷

Most people think they need to learn the regions, understand the classifications, and memorise a long list of French names.

You don’t.

The easiest place to start is with the style of wine you already enjoy.

Love smooth, approachable reds? Start with Merlot-led Bordeaux.

Prefer something with more structure and depth? Explore Cabernet-led blends.

Looking for something fresh and easy-drinking? Don’t overlook Bordeaux Rosé.

Bordeaux doesn’t need to be complicated.

You just need a way in.

Giving the vines a haircut ✂️🍇

At this time of year, we trim the vine canopy and guide the growth between catch wires, creating neat, open rows throughout the vineyard.

Why does it matter?

A clear canopy allows sunlight to reach the vines more evenly and helps the fruit ripen consistently throughout the season.

It also improves airflow and allows us to efficiently apply the sulphur and copper-based sprays we use to protect the vines from mildew.

The result is healthier vines, better fruit, and ultimately, better wine.

One of those small vineyard jobs that plays a big role in what ends up in your glass.
