The International Energy Agency (IEA) just published its "Net Zero by 2050" report.
https://www.iea.org/reports/net-zero-by-2050
The agency confirms that limiting global warming to 1.5°C requires achieving net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. Therefore, the energy sector that is responsible for around 3/4 of global GHG emissions has to go through a "complete transformation". This change has to begin right away with no new oil & gas field development + no new coal mine / mine extension from now on !
Despite this key annoncement, some figures strike me as Net Zero by 2050 means:
❗ -75% of CH4 emissions from fossil fuel suppliers by 2030 (less than 10 years!)
❗ -7% of energy used by 2030 (vs current level) while the global economy will increase by 40% ???!!! How ?
❗Electrification is key with PV and wind electricity production 2020 levels x4 by 2030. This will have significant impacts on the ressources used !
❗ The emission reductions by 2030 are based on technology currently available. BUT, 1/2 of the emission reductions by 2050 are based on technology not yet fully developed (prototype and demonstration phase)!
Last but not least, consumer choices are definitely cited as a key element: around 55% of the cumulative emissions reductions in the pathway are linked to them.
