Katie Jones makes daringly different wines in rural France from very old vines

Well, what a lovely surprise we had this week! 🍇🌿

Alex from brought some rather nice people to visit us at Domaine Jones.

After a picnic lunch at the w**ery, they came up to the Aguilar vineyard to meet us old vines.

And then came the big moment…

One of the guests chose me! ❤️

Yes, out of all the old Carignan vines in Aguilar, I was one of the 5 lucky vines that were adopted.

So now I have someone following my adventures through pruning, budburst, flowering, those long hot summer days and, eventually, harvest.

Not bad when you’re well over 100 years old.

Thank you Alex for bringing my new friend to meet me. I promise to grow some lovely grapes in return.

The w**ery is full of lovely aromas, happy memories and plenty of smiles.

A huge merci to our little dream team for all the hard work, laughter, early mornings and long days that made it possible.

Katie’s Old Vine Club Harvest Day to celebrate the end of the 2026 harvest. Old Vine rescuers came to help pick the grapes from my 121 year old carignan vines here in Tuchan and we had such a good time! When I first started my Domaine I dreamt of doing something like this - a dream come true!

There comes a point during les vendanges when appearances go out of the window and it’s all about survival. 😂

When your shorts decide they’ve had enough, there’s no time to change — you grab a bit of rope, tie them up and get back to the grapes.

No stylist. No designer belt. No problem.

When it’s too hot to harvest in the afternoon Michel, Delphine and the pickers 🇪🇸 put on their head torches and started picking before sunrise !

🍇 Old vines helping old friends 🍇

Very happy to be able to help out fellow w**emaker Gilles Troullier, who lost a heartbreaking 90% of his vineyards in the wildfires in July.

Since then, Gilles has been inundated with offers of grapes from neighbouring vignerons — a wonderful reminder of just how supportive the w**e community can be when things go wrong. ❤️

But Gilles had to venture a little further afield to find white grapes and my old vines were only too happy to step in and donate some of their precious Grenache Gris grapes. 🍇 They’re rather proud to know that their grapes will help Gilles actually make some w**e this year.

After everything he has been through, we’re wishing Gilles all the luck in the world for what must be an unimaginably difficult vintage.

The chilling system packed up on Sunday. 😱 A w**emaker’s nightmare.

And obviously it chose a Sunday. In August. During harvest. Because why wouldn’t it? 😂

With the whites mid-ferment and temperatures outside pushing the high 30s, things could have gone seriously wrong. Pas de panique 🫨

So we did what old vines have taught us to do: adapt, be patient and keep going. 🌿🍇 If a 100-year-old Carignan can survive drought, heatwaves and wild boar, surely we could survive four days without our chilling system.

We changed the picking schedule, transferred our precious little lots of fermenting juice into the refrigerated re**er (thank goodness for that!), ordered a new compressor and found a repair team willing to come out in August. 🥳

And today, four rather long days later, by 5pm we should finally be back up and chilling. 🤞❄️

Harvest is underway at Domaine Jones 🍇✂️

We don’t want trailer loads of grapes.
We don’t want picking machines at dawn.
And we don’t want hundreds of thousands of litres of w**e.

We want our grapes picked by hand, by our faithful team who know these vineyards almost as well as we do.

We want only the best grapes coming through the w**ery door.

And we want Will to have the time to take care of them properly in the w**ery — no rushing, no conveyor belt, no cutting corners.

Small harvests. Old vines. Good people. And taking the time to do things properly.

We’re doing harvest our way. 🍇❤️
