PHASEVIEW in Vertebrate Evolution Study!

In the recent paper, "Co-option of Neck Muscles Supported the Vertebrate Water-to-Land Transition," advanced imaging methods, including the PHASEVIEW Alpha3 system, played a key role in investigating the evolutionary origins of neck muscles.

The PHASEVIEW Alpha3 is a powerful light-sheet microscopy system that provides incredible precision and resolution. In this study, it was used to obtain 3D visualizations with a pixel size of 650 nm and a z-step of 1 µm, allowing detailed exploration of mesodermal contributions to neck development in vertebrates. The system, with its dual 10x NA 0.25 objectives, enabled simultaneous illumination from both sides of the sample, while the real-time focus sweeping function ensured consistent light-sheet thickness across the x-axis.

These technologies helped researchers uncover how ancient muscle groups were co-opted for terrestrial adaptation, supporting the transition from aquatic to land-based life.
