π¨ Construction Industry β Please Stay Vigilant π¨
Police Scotland North East Crime Reduction Team is asking everyone across the construction sector to remain alert following recent thefts of plant, tools and materials across the UK. These crimes cause major disruption, delay projects and increase costs for businesses already under pressure.
The Secured by Design Construction Site Security Guide highlights several practical steps that can significantly reduce opportunities for theft and unauthorised access:
π Secure Your Perimeter Ensure hoarding or fencing is sturdy, at least 2m high, and free from climbing aids. Keep materials and equipment away from the boundary to prevent offenders using them to gain access.
πͺ Control Site Access Limit entry points, use clear sign in procedures, and make sure staff and visitors display identification. Challenge anyone not wearing the correct PPE or ID.
π’ Protect Site Offices Avoid storing valuables inside temporary cabins. Consider monitored intruder alarms, secure doors and windows, and proper key management.
π‘ Lighting & CCTV Good lighting reduces hiding places and supports CCTV. Ensure cameras cover vulnerable areas and that someone on-site knows how to operate the system if police require footage. CCTV should alert you out with working hours if anyone is on site.
π Vehicle & Tool Security Never leave vehicles running unattended. Remove tools from vans overnight, use locking tool boxes, and consider forensic marking or registration databases to help recover stolen items.
π§ Plant & Machinery Store plant out of sight when possible. Photograph, Record VIN, chassis and engine numbers, and consider secure compounds or tracking devices for high value machinery.
π Reporting suspicious behaviour early can prevent further crime. If you see something concerning, contact Police Scotland on 101, or 999 in an emergency. You can also report anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Letβs work together to keep construction sites across the North East safe, secure and protected.
