What a beautiful morning in Stoney after all the rain these past few days.

Scott has been down collecting the scorecards ahead of our Southern Invitational client golf day tomorrow.

The forecast is looking great so we better get the refreshments chilling for what is sure to be a great day.

We have Sam Locke, professional golfer and member of the Tartan Pro Tour, as well as the HotelPlanner Tour doing our prize giving after we've had lunch.

If you'd like to join the team on the terrace for a few sociables after we'd welcome the opportunity to socialise with you all further.

What is Passive investing?

Passive investing is an investment strategy that aims to replicate the performance of an index by tracking it, which means holding the same stocks in similar percentages. This is considered a lower-cost way to invest.

🛡️ When key person cover becomes personal for business owners

Most business owners understand the theory behind key person and critical illness cover. But when unexpected illness hits close to home, the practical value of having the right protection in place becomes very real.

In this personal account, Richard Murray of Elephants Child shares how a serious heart condition in 2024 highlighted the wider impact a key person’s absence can have on a business - operationally, financially and emotionally.

💡 At a glance:

• Key person and critical illness cover helped reduce financial and operational pressure during a prolonged medical situation.
• Access to private treatment through the policy significantly shortened waiting times for surgery.
• The business was able to avoid rushed decisions and support a gradual return to work.
• The experience reinforced how protection can support not just profits, but people, stability and continuity.

One of the key themes from the article is uncertainty. Unlike bereavement, where businesses often move quickly to restructure, serious illness can create a prolonged period where no one knows how long recovery may take or what capacity someone may return in.

The article also highlights an often overlooked point: protection policies are not only about replacing lost revenue. They can provide breathing space, reduce stress on leadership teams and help businesses continue operating steadily during difficult periods.

For many business owners, it’s a reminder that resilience planning isn’t just about protecting the business - it’s also about protecting the people behind it.

🏠 What are offset mortgages – and how do they work?

With interest rates expected to remain elevated through 2026, many borrowers are looking more closely at ways to reduce mortgage costs. One option attracting attention is the offset mortgage — a product that links your savings to your mortgage balance.

💡 At a glance:

• An offset mortgage allows savings held in a linked account to reduce the mortgage balance charged interest.
• For example, someone with a £250,000 mortgage and £25,000 in linked savings would only pay mortgage interest on £225,000.
• Borrowers can usually choose whether the offset reduces monthly repayments or shortens the mortgage term.
• Savings remain accessible, although withdrawing money increases the mortgage balance on which interest is charged.

Offset mortgages can offer flexibility, particularly for people with substantial savings or fluctuating income — such as the self-employed. They may also appeal to higher-rate taxpayers, as the benefit comes through reduced mortgage interest rather than taxable savings interest.

However, offset deals are not always the cheapest option. Interest rates can be higher than standard mortgages, and the benefits depend heavily on the amount of savings held alongside the loan.

For some households, the ability to keep savings accessible while reducing mortgage interest can be valuable. For others, a larger deposit or traditional repayment structure may prove more suitable.

As with any mortgage decision, understanding the trade-offs and how the structure fits individual circumstances is important before committing to a particular route.

Nvidia is now the largest company in the S&P 500, with a 7.0% index weight - larger than entire sectors like energy or utilities.

Apple follows with a 6.3% share, while Microsoft ranks third at 4.6%. These three companies account for about 18% of the S&P 500’s total value, while AI-driven firms represent 10 of the top 20 largest companies.

Start Early, Not Perfectly

The start of a new tax year often comes with good intentions.

“I’ll be more organised this year.” “I’ll stay on top of things.” “I won’t leave it until March again.”

But in reality, most people don’t need a complete overhaul.

They just need to start a little earlier.

Because the difference between a calm tax year and a stressful one is rarely knowledge.

It’s timing.

Putting things in place gradually tends to feel easier, more manageable, and far less pressured than trying to make everything happen at once.

And importantly, it allows decisions to be made with more clarity, rather than urgency.

That doesn’t mean doing everything today.

It simply means not leaving everything until later.

The clients who tend to feel most in control aren’t necessarily doing anything complex.

They’ve just built a habit of staying slightly ahead.

And over time, that creates a completely different experience.

Less rushed. Less reactive. More considered.

A new tax year doesn’t require a fresh start.

Just a slightly earlier one.

Scott enjoyed a great day today at Stonehaven Golf Club for the sponsors day. Hosting some of the boys from the office as well as our friend and client, Richard.

After a short weather delay the gents enjoyed a great afternoon along the cliffs of Cowie.

A bogey free 62 wasn't enough to get in amongst the prizes but the gents had a great day.
