With spring just around the corner and with the temperatures becoming warmer, those who have rugged their horses over the winter will need to consider the differing range of temperatures that the spring months can bring.

Checking the weather forecast regularly will give you a rough indication of what temperatures and weather lies ahead and just remember that the temperatures at 6am can be a lot different to the temperature at midday, so if you are feeling cold when at the yard before work, this may not be the case for the rest of the day! Consider changing weights of rug for day vs night, or even removing rugs completely during the day.

Just remember, the ambient temperature range in which a healthy unclipped adult horse can easily maintain their body temperature is between 5 and 25 degrees Celsius, which is a lot wider than humans!

Are you on the lookout for ragwort in your fields❓

This yellow-flowered w**d, that flowers between June to October, is poisonous to horses at all stages of growth, causing liver damage, which may eventually result in severe disease and even death.

Ragwort has a bitter taste so horses don’t tend to eat it, however, horses will eat ragwort if nothing else is available and be aware that when wilted or dried it becomes more palatable but retains its toxicity.

The BHS recognises the role ragwort plays in biodiversity and we do not advocate blanket removal of the w**d. However, as it is toxic to grazing animals, we strongly recommend that it is removed from areas deemed high risk i.e. within 50 metres of livestock and horse grazing or land used for forage production.

Our ragwort toolkit offers guidance on how to identify ragwort, how to remove the plant safely and effectively, and how to resolve issues with neighbouring landowners, including public bodies. To access the toolkit specific to your nation visit:

A horse only has a certain number of jumps, extended movements, bursts of speed and twists and turns in its lifetime.
The sooner they are used up,the sooner the horse breaks down.
So choose the fitness training programmes wisely and spread the precious commodities out over a lifetime.
Choose your competitions carefully, be mindful of the ground surfaces that suit the individual.
Look after your horse as if they were a human athlete.
Good diet, correct phsycological environment and socialitation.
A horse should be nurtured and thought of as long term companion, not a machine that has to be fixed and held together with drugs, procedures and steel plates, just to win a few trophies.
Take pride in what can be achieved with a good partnership and smile 😊
