May is Skin Cancer & Melanoma Awareness Month ☀️

For those working in construction and other outdoor industries, exposure to UV radiation is a very real workplace risk even on cloudy days.

Construction workers are one of the most at-risk groups for skin cancer due to long periods spent working outdoors. Early signs can include:
• A new or changing mole
• Patches of skin that don’t heal
• Red, scaly or painful areas on the skin

The good news? Many cases are preventable with the right precautions.
Simple steps can make a big difference:
✔ Wear sunscreen with high SPF
✔ Cover exposed skin where possible
✔ Wear a hat and UV-protective eyewear
✔ Take breaks in shaded areas
✔ Regularly check your skin for changes

Spotting skin cancer early can save lives.

Latest figures from the HSE show that 35 workers lost their lives following falls from height in 2024/25, with construction continuing to be one of the highest-risk industries.

At Safety Scotland, we know that prevention starts long before work begins:
✔️ Proper planning
✔️ Suitable equipment
✔️ Clear risk assessments
✔️ The right training and supervision

No deadline or shortcut is worth risking a life.

This week is an important reminder to review procedures, refresh training, and keep safety at the forefront on every site.

If you’d like support with working at height procedures, risk assessments or training, give the team a call at 01224 826 777 or send us an email [email protected].

Busy week for the team 👏

On Tuesday, we partnered with North East Scotland College to deliver training to the first cohort of the new CECA Construction Operations course.

Yesterday, our Director Michelle was kindly invited by Friends of Anchor to Brave as a thank you for the work we’ve been proud to support.

It’s been a fantastic week of collaboration, training, and supporting organisations that are making a real difference across the North East.

Last week, we said goodbye to Brian as he headed off to enjoy his retirement.

Brian brought a huge amount of experience and professionalism to Safety Scotland, and it’s been a real pleasure having him as part of the team. He’ll be missed by everyone here, as well as by the clients he worked with.

We wish him all the very best for a long, happy, and well-earned retirement.

On a positive note, we’re really excited to welcome his son, Ross, to the team as our new Health & Safety Advisor and to continue the great work ahead.

Stress awareness is a health and safety issue. Are you treating it like one?

This Stress Awareness Month, the message is simple: be the change.

Workplace stress isn’t just “part of the job”, it’s a genuine risk to your people and your business. Left unmanaged, it can lead to burnout, absenteeism, and long-term health issues.

Employers have a duty to manage stress just like any other workplace hazard.

So, where do you start?
• Review workloads and expectations
• Create a culture where people feel heard
• Encourage open conversations
• Carry out stress risk assessments

Because a safer workplace isn’t just about physical risks, it’s about protecting mental wellbeing too.

Be the change. Make stress management part of your health and safety approach.

We can help you put the right measures in place. Contact us today at 01224 826 777 or email [email protected]
