Lucie's also got a curious eye for all the little plants surviving in very little soil in highly windy and salty conditions on the Norther shoreline when travelling.

1. Potentilla nitida (shining cinquefoil); a mat-forming alpine perennial
2. Lotus cytisoides (grey bird's-foot-trefoil); a perennial shrub
3. Phedimus spurius (Caucasian stonecrop); a mat-forming semi-evergreen perennial
4. Cerastium tomentosum (Snow in summer); a small herbaceous evergreen plant
5. Glandora prostrata 'Heavenly Blue'; spreading evergreen shrub
6. Armeria maritima (sea thrift); a mat-forming evergreen perennial
7. Campanula carpatica (Bell flower); a clump-forming, low-growing perennial

Would you know some more rock garden plants?

Project Update: What a transformation to the front garden in Kintore. That is the paving getting laid. Plants are bringing the space to life. Creating a new feel to the garden that is welcoming, practical, and vibrant. And if you are wondering why there is a gap in the fence it is so you can watch the red squirrels in the wood while you are washing the dishes.

Lucie has recently joined the HD Garden Design studio and moved to Aberdeenshire. She enjoys exploring places and most of her design experience is in designing for health and wellbeing. Whilst exploring the Scottish village Cullen and its seashore gems on the North coast, she's noticed an exciting example where colours, plants, and individual effort can impact the whole community in a positive light. Making a difference to our mental health, because people may feel more welcomed in the space, safe, and prone to connect with others and pause.

Thanks to the combination of colorful facades, planting pots, and a human imperfect touch, the whole village seems to be a ray of sunshine, allowing a joyful experience, especially in places with a significant lack of daylight and sunshine throughout the year. Even the tiniest effort matters.

Project Update: An exciting day for every garden designer! Heather and Lucie have had lots of fun positioning the right plant to the right location within the project boundary. Seeing the designed planting scheme implemented on site is so satisfying, despite the rainy condition.

Firstly, they unload the plants from the van. Secondly, they work with their paper plans figuring out the right location for the right plant. Then, they work with gardeners that are planting it and consulting when something is unclear. That is why, planting plans need to be as detailed and clear as possible avoiding any discrepancies on site.

Designers can certainly spend hours repositioning plants on the spot, seeing a room for improvement. However; time is running, off they go to another site.

Heather and her friends continue experiencing the Cairgorms 'Lairig Ghru', observing water dynamics on the way this time. You can see the Pools of Dee located at approximately 874m elevation, one of the two main sources of the river Dee. It is so fascinating to see water taking its forms from little streams and puddles, to larger lochs and ice formation. What an adventurous weekend finished with a friendly wild swim.

As designers, we need to accommodate water for both soft and hard works. Water is such a vital natural resource, which can bring a lot of joy as well as many concerns to design with.

You can take a look in the bio at one of water design examples, implementing an additional drainage for occurring ground water as well as a water feature adding a peaceful water element in the garden in Kintore.

Heather and her friends are noticing the fascinating durability of the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) on their weekend walk through the iconic Scottish Cairngorms 'Lairig Ghru'.

Have you thought of how does the tree possibly survive in the rocky ground with so little soil? Where do the roots find its way to nutrients? Have you also noticed how much the conditions vary as you go up the hill, how are they able to grow at the near edges of river bank and in the highly windy and frosty environment.

Scots pine is an example of a highly adaptable tree with surface level roots that grow into the tiniest little cracks to gain purchase on the ground against the wind and extract nutrients. The higher up they grow the smaller and stockier they are to survive in the wind.

Project update: Completing the milestone of laid turf and in-progress paving, steps, and water feature means we are past the heaviest digging and can finally start seeing our vision come to life in the rear garden.

Our client in Newcastle has just shared with us some pictures of the garden a year after it was planted. Designed for year-round interest with perennials and providing a cosy seating area. The clients really enjoy the vibrant flowers and lush spring growth on a moody, rainy day while staying warm and dry inside.
