How do I know what I should be focusing on in my business right now?

What would someone need to be warned about before meeting you? I’d love to know!

Usually I keep my role within Temple Spa and The Business Edit completely separate. I suppose I’ve always thought they were two very different parts of my working life and belonged in different boxes but recently I’ve realised they actually have far more in common than I thought.

With The Business Edit, so much of my work is about helping business owners create more calm. Getting things out of their head, making sense of everything that’s going on, working out what actually matters and putting some structure around it so running the business feels less overwhelming. Temple Spa might look completely different from the outside, but a lot of what I do comes back to the same thing. Giving people a bit of time to stop, breathe, switch off and look after themselves. My workplace wellness sessions and spa experiences in particular have really made me see the connection between the two.

I spent over 20 years working in HR and people-focused roles before retraining in beauty therapy and Reiki, alongside all the leadership and business experience I’ve picked up over the years. When I look at it like that, I suppose the common thread has always been people - understanding what’s going on underneath the surface and finding ways to make things feel a little easier. You can have all the plans, systems and strategies in the world, but there’s still a human being running the business and if their head is constantly full, they’re exhausted and they never properly switch off, everything feels harder.

And on that note, I’m running a complimentary 30-minute online wellness session on Wednesday 16th September at 7pm. It’ll be a little bit of breathing, relaxation, meditation and time to properly switch off plus I’ll send skincare samples out beforehand so you can join in at home.

Basically, I ask a lot of questions!

BUT they’re necessary to help me work out what’s really going on, what’s creating problems, what needs to change, what needs to happen next and who is going to make it all happen.

Over the past few months, I’ve had the privilege of supporting Young Enterprise in Scotland behind the scenes across strategic conversations, stakeholder engagement and the events surrounding this year’s Company Programme Finals at Hampden, which I attended on Wednesday. What stood out throughout wasn’t just the talent and ambition of the young people involved (which was incredible!) but the genuine willingness from businesses, educators, partners and communities to come together around a shared purpose.

The conversations at the roundtable highlighted that collaboration alone isn’t enough - there needs to be a stronger integration between education, business, government and communities if the outcomes for young people across Scotland are to be improved. And perhaps most importantly, we need to stop designing things for young people and start building more with them.

There was such honesty, energy and openness in the room and it genuinely felt like the start of something bigger. Grateful to have played a small part in it and huge credit to Nicky and the Young Enterprise Scotland team for creating the space for these discussions to happen.

If you’re busy things must be working yes? Not necessarily. I see a lot of businesses where there’s a lot happening but very little of it is actually moving things forward. Not because they’re doing anything wrong but because everything is being treated as equally important which means nothing really is.

It’s not always about doing more, ask yourself, what actually matters right now? What’s creating progress? What’s just creating noise?

Because once that’s clear, everything else becomes easier to decide.

People often understand the idea of what I do - clarity, perspective, helping you figure out what’s really going on in your business. But recently, someone said to me, “I get it but I’m still not entirely sure what that actually looks like in practice”. It’s a fair point because the work I do doesn’t always fit neatly into a list of deliverables. It’s not about ticking things off or following a set process. It’s about stepping into a business, understanding what’s really happening beneath the surface, and helping the owner make clear, confident decisions about what comes next.

Sometimes that means untangling everything that’s started to feel important so we can see what actually matters, sometimes it’s spotting why something isn’t working even when all the “right” things are being done and sometimes it’s helping someone step out of being in everything, so their business can actually function without them at the centre of it all. It looks different every time, because every business is different but the outcome is usually the same - things feel clearer, lighter and more intentional. And most importantly, progress starts to happen again.

I’ve never properly shown what I actually do so I’ve written something about real situations, with real examples from client work. So if you’ve ever wondered what I actually do, hopefully this will give you a much clearer picture!

Clarity Check
What’s really going on?

31/03/2026

What most people don’t see is that this kind of feedback rarely comes from doing more. It comes from creating space to think, prioritising properly and making cleaner decisions. This client had the vision, she didn’t need more strategy, she needed clarity!

Here’s what she said after we worked together…..

Hey, I’m Jen 👋 I work with established female business owners whose businesses are working but feel heavier or more complicated than they should.

The way we work together depends on what’s needed and is entirely bespoke.
