North-east businesses rethink ‘rip and replace’ approach to building compliance

Businesses across Aberdeen and the North-east are reassessing how they approach fire and security upgrades, as regulatory expectations continue to tighten across Scotland.

Aberdeen-based Kore Solutions says it has seen a marked increase in enquiries from property owners, facilities managers and industrial operators seeking structured assessments of existing life-safety systems - rather than automatic full replacement.

Daniel Craig, Fire & Security Manager at Kore Solutions, said the industry’s traditional “rip and replace” mindset does not always reflect today’s technical reality.

“There’s an assumption that if a system isn’t new, it isn’t compliant. In many cases, that simply isn’t accurate. Some buildings require full replacement. Others benefit from phased upgrades that improve safety and reporting while minimising disruption.”
Commercial offices, industrial estates and energy-sector facilities across the region are facing increased scrutiny around fire detection, access control and system integration.

Modern technology increasingly allows phased upgrades aligned to capital budgets, improved monitoring and compliance reporting, and integration of newer platforms with viable legacy infrastructure.

Craig added:
“Compliance should be driven by technical evaluation, not assumption. Every building carries a different risk profile. Our responsibility is to assess properly and recommend proportionately.”

In response to growing regional demand, Kore Solutions is currently recruiting experienced Fire & Security Engineers to strengthen its Aberdeen-based team.

The company expects compliance-led investment in building systems to remain a key focus for North-east businesses throughout 2026. https://kore-solutions.co.uk/news-insights/north-east-businesses-rethink-rip-and-replace-approach-to-building-compliance

Smart buildings don’t need to happen all at once.

One of the biggest misconceptions we still see is that becoming a smart building means a full overhaul — new systems everywhere, all at once.

In reality, the most effective buildings evolve in phases:

🔹 Start with visibility

🔹 Integrate where it makes sense

🔹 Optimise only when it delivers real value

We’ve set out a practical, phased approach in our latest blog - focused on reducing risk, avoiding unnecessary complexity, and making smarter decisions over time.

Good building systems don’t shout for attention.
They just work.

That usually comes down to a few simple things:

planning before installing
understanding how systems interact
flagging risks early
supporting what’s installed for the long term

It’s a quieter way of working — but it makes buildings easier to run, safer to manage, and more reliable day in, day out.

Most building problems don’t start with bad work.

They start with rushed decisions.
A system installed in isolation.
A quick fix that became permanent.
A design that didn’t reflect how the building is actually used.

Taking a bit more time at the outset usually means fewer surprises later - and building systems that work properly, day in, day out.

That’s the approach we take at Kore.

This is what Kore looks like, in practice.

Turning up prepared.
Explaining what matters.
Flagging risks early.
Leaving things better than we found them.

That’s how we approach every project - whether it’s fire & security, electrical, air- conditioning, data, or building systems that simply need to work properly, day in, day out.

No fuss.
No noise.
Just experienced people doing the job right.

When you’re choosing a partner, how they turn up always matters.

Meet the Team: Daniel Craig – Fire & Security Manager

Kore’s Daniel Craig doesn’t attend meetings in a tux, and he doesn’t drive an Aston Martin…

But he is the one responsible for keeping your buildings safe and secure.

As Fire & Security Manager, Daniel runs the day-to-day operations of our Fire & Security division.

That includes surveys, project delivery, client meetings, managing our engineering team, and making sure customers get fast, practical support when they need it.

The Threats He Sees Daily

“One of the most common I see is people treating fire and security as an afterthought or a quick fix without properly defining the problem.
When systems are planned early and integrated properly, they’re safer, more efficient — and more cost-effective.”

Shaken, not stirred. Designed, installed, and supported properly. Without the dramatics.

Did you see our recent Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce article?

Westhill-based Kore Solutions has reported a marked increase in enquiries from businesses across the North-east looking to modernise ageing fire, security, HVAC, lighting and network systems.

The trend reflects a wider move towards more efficient, connected, and easier-to-manage workplaces.

Ryan Pirie, operations director at Kore Solutions, said: “More organisations are realising that legacy systems aren’t just inconvenient – they’re holding buildings back. We’re seeing a clear shift away from reactive fixes towards planned, joined-up upgrades that improve safety, efficiency, and day-to-day operations.”

According to Kore, many local facilities and operations teams are now facing similar challenges: frequent faults across fire or security systems, rising energy costs linked to outdated lighting and AC, and older cabling infrastructure that struggles to support modern building technology.

Mr Pirie added: “When different systems are installed and maintained by different contractors, it can become difficult to get a clear view of what’s working and what isn’t. Businesses are looking for a more coordinated approach so they can phase upgrades properly and avoid repeated disruption.”

In response to these enquiries, the company has published new guidance outlining three key priority areas for organisations planning building improvements: fire and security, energy systems, and network and cabling infrastructure. The guidance highlights the growing need for connected systems that reduce reactive call-outs and support more efficient long-term building management.

Kore’s multi-disciplinary teams - covering fire & security, electrical, HVAC and network communications - have recently supported several North-east businesses in upgrading legacy equipment, improving site visibility, and reducing maintenance costs through cloud-managed and future-ready solutions.

Kore Solutions is encouraging organisations across the region to review existing building systems and consider phased upgrade plans that minimise disruption while addressing known risks.

Phased upgrades reduce disruption

One thing we’re hearing more often from facilities teams is the value of planning upgrades in phases — not rushing decisions, but building a clear picture first.

That joined-up thinking approach reduces disruption and makes future changes far easier to manage.

We're ready to help more FM teams take better control of their buildings.
