Tree Spotting Thursday!

This week we're heading to Dunkeld to meet a very special Perthshire tree – the Parent Larch.

Planted in 1738, this remarkable European larch is now almost 300 years old and is the sole survivor of five larches brought over from the Tyrol region of the Alps. It became known as the “Mother of Millions”, thanks to the huge spread of larch planting that followed across Perthshire and beyond.

And here's a lovely little connection to DK Logs… 🔥

Larch is one of the woods in our popular firewood mix, so there's a good chance that if you order a load from us, you'll have a few pieces of larch in your pile!

From a remarkable tree planted almost 300 years ago to the logs warming homes today — we think that's quite a story. 🌲🔥

Tree Spotting Thursday!

This week, we're heading to Scone Palace to meet one of Perthshire's most impressive giants… The Giant Sequoia! You might know it as a Giant Redwood, and this magnificent tree is certainly living up to its name.

Native to California, Giant Sequoias are famous for their enormous size and extraordinary longevity. So what is one doing in the heart of Perthshire?

The answer lies in the Victorian passion for collecting exotic trees from around the world. Scone Palace's beautiful Pinetum began in the mid-1800s, and today it is home to some truly magnificent conifers.

And this particular giant is quite something…

Around 44 metres tall — that's roughly the height of a 14-storey building!

And there's an extra connection to our previous Tree Spotting Thursday…
David Douglas, the famous Scottish plant hunter who introduced the Douglas fir to Britain, was born right here in Scone and worked as a gardener at Scone Palace before setting off on his plant-hunting adventures.

So Scone really does have some impressive tree-planting history!

We think these magnificent giants are a perfect fit for Perthshire — Big Tree Country.

TREE-SPOTTING THURSDAY: NIEL GOW'S OAK

Did you know there's a famous old oak in Perthshire with a story involving one of Scotland's greatest traditional fiddlers?

Meet Niel Gow's Oak, near Inver on the banks of the River Tay, just upstream from Dunkeld.

Niel Gow was born near Dunkeld in 1727 and became one of Scotland's most celebrated fiddle players. Local tradition says that he would sit beneath this magnificent oak, fiddle in hand, composing and playing his music.

The story goes that the Duke of Atholl could hear Gow playing from across the River Tay and was so impressed that he eventually employed him as a musician. . What's particularly lovely is that this isn't just a modern tourist tale. The tree was already being called "Neil Gow's Tree" by the 1850s, with the tradition that Gow sat beneath it to compose.

Today, the ancient oak is still standing beside the Tay. At around 300 years old, with a girth of almost 6 metres, it has certainly witnessed a lot of Perthshire history!

Look closely and you'll see the character of an ancient tree — its hollowing trunk, weathered branches and mosses and lichens providing a home for all sorts of wildlife. It lost some branches during a storm in 2012, causing the bench beneath to be destroyed. Happily it was replaced the following year with words from Michael Marra's song Niel Gow's Apprentice: "Sit beneath the fiddle tree with the ghost of Neil Gow next to me."

And if you fancy going to find it, you can include Niel Gow's Oak on the Dunkeld & Birnam walking network, making it a lovely excuse for a woodland and riverside wander.

Tree Spotting Thursday!

This week we're visiting one of Perthshire's true giants...

The magnificent Douglas Firs at The Hermitage, Dunkeld.

Some Douglas Firs stand over 60 metres (200 feet) tall—about the height of a 20-storey building!

Although they're native to North America, they were introduced to Britain in 1827 by local plant hunter David Douglas, who was born near Perth. In fact, these impressive trees are named after him.

Perthshire's rich soils and plentiful rainfall have helped them become some of the tallest trees in the UK, earning our county its well-deserved nickname 'Big Tree Country'.

Tree Spotting Thursday!

Did you know that Perthshire has a staggering 200,000 acres of woodland and more champion trees than anywhere else in the UK? Truly Big Tree Country!

Hence we will be featuring some of our favourite local trees over the next few weeks!

This week's star is......Fortingall Yew!
• Believed to be in the region of 5,000 years old it is one of the oldest living trees in Europe
• Already ancient when the Romans invaded Britain
• Local legend says Pontius Pilate was born nearby (there’s no proof but why would anyone make it up?)

It's hard to appreciate from this photo just how enormous and impressive this ancient yew really is. If you ever get the chance, it's well worth a visit.

The hay is safely in, so the beasts will be well fed when the colder months arrive. That's one job we can tick off the list!
