Throwback Thursday

🪵Taken at Arniston and Duns Castle estates circa 1989, these 3 photos show our ex-MOD Allis Chalmers loader at work.

🪵It was fitted with a Hawk Fork Grab, was 4-wheel drive and had a factory fitted winch which we worked with a built-on logging arch.

🪵The " Allis " was originally operated by the famous " Lone Wolf " Cecil Appleby who lived in a caravan from job to job, which can be seen in the first photo.

🪵This self-sufficient outfit could lift up to 8 tonnes, kept logs clean and could even load trailers over fences.

🪵On Cecil's retirement the Allis was sold to our regular contractor, Denny Thompson from Cragside.

We were delighted to welcome the Glendale Historical Society to A&J Scott today for a tour of the site.

Guests enjoyed exploring our existing mill, gaining an insight into its history and day-to-day operations, as well as seeing first-hand the exciting progress being made on the new Mill 10 development. It was a pleasure to share both our heritage and our future plans with such an engaged group.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the society for their very kind donation of £100 to our chosen charity; HospiceCare North Northumberland as a gesture of appreciation – a thoughtful contribution to a truly important local cause.

Throwback Thursday

📸Taken in 1992 at Lindean Farm near Selkirk, these photos show that during the dry summer months, whenever possible to save costs on extraction, we would take "the wagon to the wood".

🪵By using the field we were able to skid the produce in select tree length poles for presentation, grading, and uplifting with only the remaining short wood needing to be forwarded.

Throwback Thursday

🪵Here we see Robert Scott, third generation of the family business, on his first day at work, aged 18 at Touch Estate, Stirling, in 2008.

🪵As part of his training, Robert has learnt all aspects of the business and in this instance is helping to grade prime planking Oak.

🪵He is currently MD and deeply involved with our Mill 10 installation.

🌴 Operational Update 🌴

A&J Scott has completed its first delivery of palm trees, marking a strategic expansion into tropical timber supply.

The load was collected and transported under standard conditions, with additional handling considerations for climate sensitivity. Early feedback has been positive, and we are currently reviewing further opportunities within this sector.

We remain committed to delivering high-quality timber products — whatever the species.

From forests to beaches, we have you covered.

Throwback Thursday

An unusual part of our fleet in 1990 was this Renault tractor unit, resplendent in full A&J Scott livery.
Whilst we preferred Foden's and Scania we periodically did like to try other manufactures.
Note that this was just before we started to use OAK Registrations.

Throwback Thursday

🪵Sometimes it was more economical to hire mobile cranes to load big logs.
🪵Here we see, again in the 1990's, the red crane at Dupplin Estate, Perth on a handy piece of old road and the Baldwin crane at The Hirsel, Coldstream.
🤔Can anyone name the men in the photos?

Throwback Thursday

🪵Taken in the mid 1990's on Lothian Estates, Jedburgh, these photos show the loading of two different types of specialist oak.

🪵Firstly, the large diameter log is destined for quarter sawing whilst the long log is a "keel" which must be straight for, ideally over 30 feet.

🪵Keel logs are sawn in the length and form the main part of traditional wooden boat building.

🪵Note that in both instances how the logs are carefully handled to reduce any bark skinning.

🏉 Great result for Alnwick RFC! 🏉

We were proud to sponsor the Alnwick RFC match against Heath this weekend, and what a game it was! After a hard-fought battle on the pitch, Alnwick came away with a fantastic 27–21 victory. 💪

Well done to all the players and coaches for an exciting performance, and thanks to the supporters who came out to cheer the team on.

At A&J Scott, we’re always proud to support our local clubs and community.

Throwback Thursday

Following on from last week, here we see our 1960's main breakdown saw in Mill 1.

It was a Graham of Perth traditional circular rack bench, with the photos showing it in operation and also having it's sawdust pit being cleared.

We were delighted to welcome our valued suppliers to Wooperton this week as we continue progressing with the build of Mill 10.

This project meeting, hosted at the fantastic Ad Gefrin in Wooler, was a follow-on session from our January 2025 meeting.

We’re pleased to report that everything is progressing well and the project remains firmly on track — as shown in the photos, with one taken in January 2025 and the other taken yesterday.

It was great to bring together key partners supporting this exciting development at A&J Scott:

• HewSaw
• Indusvent
• Kallfass GmbH
• Hedlunds
• Hoga Kuston Teknikresurs
• Glendale Engineering Ltd

The session was productive and collaborative, focusing on the next stages of delivery and ensuring Mill 10 is completed to the highest standard. We’re proud to be working with such experienced and forward-thinking partners as we continue investing in the future of our business.

Throwback Thursday

🪵This week, the photos taken in the mid 1960's, show how sawlogs were extracted, loaded, and delivered to Mill 1, with a lot of "hand balling" involved.

🪵Interestingly, the crane and wagon were derivatives of ex WW2 military surplus vehicles which were commonly used in the trade, at that time.
