Planning crowd safety measures for a public space or event?

Before you get into formal risk assessments or physical measures, it is helpful to understand your starting point.

Our new pre-consultation guidance tool is designed as a sensible first step, as a quick, AI-assisted questionnaire that helps you build an initial picture of your exposure to vehicle-related risk.

Taking around five minutes to complete, it uses a simple multiple-choice format aligned to national guidance, including NPSA and ProtectUK principles. At the end, you’ll receive a clear, traffic light-style summary, along with practical guidance on what you might need to consider next.

This is not a risk assessment, and it’s not intended to replace one. This tool is designed as a first step, giving you clarity before making any decisions.

Fantastic to be at the Bartercard UK Odsal Stadium today, home of the Bradford Bulls RLFC, catching up with fellow members, committee representatives and partners of the RLGSOA Rugby League Ground Safety Officers Association.

We're incredibly proud to be a Platinum Partner of the RLGSOA, supporting the vital work carried out by safety professionals across the game. Building strong partnerships and sharing knowledge is essential to helping clubs deliver safe, welcoming environments for supporters, players and staff alike.

You may have seen our red H-Stops at events, sports matches and public gatherings and wondered what they are for.

They are not there to stop people. They are used as part of a layered safety approach to help stop or delay vehicle-as-a-weapon attacks, preventing a vehicle from progressing into crowded areas and creating valuable time for security teams and emergency services to respond.

Unlike traditional barriers, the Husson H-Stop is designed to tip on impact. This changes a vehicle's trajectory and creates friction between the vehicle and the barrier, helping to slow and stop the vehicle without the need for fixed foundations or anchors.

While vehicle-as-a-weapon attacks are unlikely, the consequences can be severe. By deploying H-Stops as part of a proportionate, risk-led security plan, event organisers can help reduce vulnerability and enhance safety.

This video shows a H-Stop crash test and demonstrates how this innovative system works.

May has been another busy month for the Crowdguard team.

From flower shows and football parades to community events and major public gatherings, we've been supporting event organisers across the UK with proportionate, risk-led HVM solutions. The month also included our largest deployment to date, with 318 Husson H-Stop barriers deployed across a major operation, which reflects the growing demand for practical, flexible HVM solutions.

Alongside our operational work, we're passionate about raising awareness and understanding of HVM across the events industry.

During May we supported The Square Metre Group's Level 2 Understanding HVM for Events course by providing HVM equipment for practical training, helping delegates gain real-world insight into how HVM supports safer public spaces.

The next course takes place in Manchester on 11th–12th August. If you'd like to learn more, get in touch with The Square Metre Group.

Thomas shows just how easy it is to manoeuvre one of the 33 Husson H-Stops deployed during the Manchester City Football Club parade after allowing an authorised vehicle through.

Once back in position, the H-Stop units are always locked in place to help ensure they remain secure throughout deployment. The system’s robust wheels allow rapid repositioning while supporting flexible, pedestrian-friendly access management for live event environments.

We are excited to be supporting this Level 2 Understanding HVM For Events course in partnership with The Square Metre Group and HVM & Event Risk Management Consultant, Russ Phillips.

As HVM partner, we believe it’s important to reinforce that hostile vehicle mitigation is never a one-size-fits-all solution. Effective protective security should always be risk-led, proportionate, and aligned to the operational needs of each event or venue, which is why we have provided a wide range of specialist HVM solutions for demonstration in this course.

If you're interested in attending, get in touch with [email protected] to book a place on the following dates:

August 11th/12th - Manchester
September 8th/9th - Birmingham
October 13th/14th - Bristol
November 10th/11th - London

Having attended the course ourselves earlier this week, we can confidently say it offers valuable insight for event safety and operational professionals looking to better understand practical, proportionate HVM planning.

We’re delighted to celebrate Jack Newby’s promotion to Senior Operations & Technical Coordinator at Crowdguard.

This is a very well-deserved step forward and reflects the progress Jack has made, not only in his role, but in the way he approaches every opportunity to learn, improve and support the wider team.

Jack has consistently shown a forward-thinking attitude, strong communication, attention to detail and a real willingness to go above and beyond. As Crowdguard continues to grow and introduce new systems, processes and ways of working, Jack has been a great supporter of that development, embracing change, asking the right questions and helping move the business forward.

He has also recently completed his Counter Terrorism Preparedness Level 3 course, continuing to build his knowledge in an area that is central to the work we do.

Jack’s development is something we’re proud to support, and we’re excited to see him continue to grow within the business.

Congratulations, Jack - thoroughly deserved. 👏

Great to be on-site today as the official HVM partners for the Level 2 Understanding HVM for Events course delivered by Square Metre Group.

Today, Deborah Ainscough attended the course providing a range of HVM solutions from Crowdguard, helping to demonstrate that HVM is not a one-size-fits-all solution.

By doing this, delegates were able to see first-hand how different products can support different operational requirements, environments and risk profiles.

The two-day course, delivered by Gareth Homer and developed alongside Russ Phillips, provides attendees with a comprehensive foundation in protecting public spaces from vehicle-borne threats, covering:

- The history of HVM
- Risk assessment and tactical planning
- Standards, products and the NPSA catalogue
- Site assessment and deployment principles

A great opportunity to support education and awareness and proportionate, risk-led approaches to public space protection.

Looking back on the Bradford City Centre regeneration project that was completed last year and the long-term value of investing in a permanent, integrated approach to public space protection.

The focus was not just on securing the city for upcoming events, but on creating a safer, more accessible environment that would support the city centre for years to come.

Working alongside Bradford Council, Sweco and Balfour Beatty plc, a combination of integrated HVM solutions - including Unafor Core, ATG Access systems, Heald Matador and other specialist measures - helped deliver certified protection while maintaining the look, feel and functionality of the public realm.

A strong example of how proportionate, design-led security can support regeneration, placemaking and long-term operational flexibility without creating an overly hostile environment.

A proud moment for us to have supported such an important project alongside great partners.
