I remember taking by Basic Tree Inspection (BTI) course and learning about two or more trees growing as one - forming a shared canopy.

I walked the dog that evening and immediately spotted this one (two).

Lantra, if you need an image for your BTI booklets, this could be yours for the low, low price of £1,000,000 😉 💰

This morning I met with Peter McReynolds MLA to discuss all things trees.

First on the agenda was the disjointed approach to Tree Works Applications in Northern Ireland. England and Wales has great guidance on TPOs and TWAs that we could, and really should be using.

We also discussed the lack of enforcement action taken by councils on individuals and organisations who wilfully damage or remove trees during development.

It is my hope that we can see some consistency across all 11 councils in the country when it comes to trees.

In recent years we have seen private residents who are rightly looking to remove diseased or dying trees be forced to jump through a number of unnecessary development-orientated hoops.

At the same time, thousands of trees are being removed contrary to planning conditions each and every year to facilitate large scale developments.

This needs to change, and hopefully with the help of elected representatives we can get there.

Woodland Snaps from a recent risk assessment in Bangor.

It’s a lot nicer surveying sites in the sunshine surrounded by green.

Certainly beats the bleak midwinter!

Make prevention part of everyday practice

Mental Health Awareness Week (11–17 May) is a great reminder that small, practical actions can make a big difference for you, your team and your business.

HSE’s Working Minds campaign offers tools, guidance, and training to help employers prevent stress and support conversations about mental health.

The campaign promotes a 5Rs approach. Focusing on the six main causes of work-related stress:
🔹 Recognise – Spot early signs, like changes in behaviour, productivity, or engagement.
🔹 Reach Out – Start simple conversations with your team.
🔹 Respond – Adjust workloads, offer flexibility, or provide extra support.
🔹 Reflect – Review what works well and what could improve.
🔹 Make it Routine – Embed mental health into everyday business practices.

Check out the new Working Minds video to see how small actions – like brief check-ins or clearer communication – can boost wellbeing and team performance.

For context, this walking tree was spotted off the beaten path in a remote woodland.

Are we felling it? Leaving it? Or anything else?

𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧 🌳 🏙️

They do it better in the British capital.

No forgotten about semi-mature Hornbeams.

No tree ties strangling newly planted Silver birch.

No tarmac covering hoggin.

Just proper, thought out green, urban infrastructure.

These small parks are everywhere in London.

They provide:

😎 Cooling (the best emoji I could find!) Not just through shade but through the cooling effects of transpiration

🚘 Carbon capture, vital in a city like London

🐿️ Wildlife corridors and habitats. The sound of nature buzzing and chirruping is more common in London, a city of 9 million people, than it is in any Northern Irish town or city.

🤔 Why can’t we do the same here?

🏠 Is grey the default colour of planning in NI?

Some great work is being done by Ards Council, but many other places are being neglected.
