SAVINGS SENT HOME SISTER-IN-LAW SUED HIGH COURT

Sarah Connor (née Bingham) and her husband travelled to Boston, America, in 1930 to work and earn money. They remained there until 1933, sending money home while they were away.

During this time, Sarah’s husband Alexander sent money back to Northern Ireland to his sister, Ellen Montgomery to be held in trust. It was later stated that in 1934, around £700 of this money was spent on livestock and farmland, but the funds – or assets – were refused to be handed over when requested.

Sarah and Alexander returned home after working in America, only to find that the money they had earned and sent back had been spent. This caused a significant family fallout.

The dispute eventually ended up in the High Court, with details appearing in the newspapers in 1936. This story was passed down to me by my dad, and it has been incredible to later confirm it through historical records and press reports

Never Give Up on Family Tree Research 🌳

Family tree research isn’t quick, and it certainly isn’t easy. It takes time, patience, and perseverance. There are moments when you feel stuck, when records seem to disappear, and when months of searching lead to nothing but questions.

But then… you find it.
That golden egg.

It might be the smallest thing — a faded newspaper clipping, a single line in a parish record, or a weathered headstone — and suddenly everything changes. That one discovery opens the next chapter in a person’s story. Connections start to form. Facts can finally be confirmed. What once felt impossible begins to make sense.

For me, this has been my story for over 18 years. Months and months of research, frustration, and doubt — and then, almost magically, it all comes together like a jigsaw puzzle. Every piece finds its place, and in that moment, every hour spent searching becomes worthwhile.

So if you’re feeling overwhelmed:

Take a break when you need to

Step back, reset, and breathe

But most of all — NEVER GIVE UP.

Because one small discovery can change everything, and the story waiting to be told is always worth it. 💛

✨ The Binghams of Northern Ireland ✨

Looking back through the generations of Bingham families, one thing stands out – just how many left Northern Ireland, like so many others, in search of a better life. 🌍✈️

In one remarkable family, all 8 siblings emigrated, leaving behind only their parents and one child. It makes you wonder…
💭 Did they ever see each other again?
💭 What journeys did they go on to achieve?
💭 How did life unfold for each of them in a new land?

Those parents were John Bingham and Margaret Hawthorne, who in the end found their final rest in Old Ballylinney Graveyard – a quiet place holding stories of love, loss, and resilience. 🕊️

Family history isn’t just about names and dates – it’s about the choices, sacrifices, and dreams that shaped the lives of those before us. ❤️
