We’re currently investigating Castrigg Roman Fortlet and a possible Iron Age Settlement with volunteers from Appleby Archaeology Group. So far the trenches have identified the foundations of roundhouses and a large enclosure ditch. High Street Roman Road runs next to the site.

We’ve completed our archaeological investigation at Deepdale thanks to the great work of the Lake District National Park Archaeology Volunteers. The trenches are backfilled, now the analysis begins! ⛰️

Working this month with archaeology volunteers from the Lake District National Park to investigate a possible Iron Age/Romano-British rural settlement at Deepdale. It’s one of a series of similar sites that are currently undated. The views are stunning!

Radiocarbon dating has confirmed the presence of Early Medieval settlement activity between 7th-10th centuries at St Paul’s Church, Irton! An enclosure has been revealed containing occupation evidence including charred grain. Irton Cross dating from the early 9th century suggests it had a religious focus. Evidence of activity in this period is very rare in Cumbria.

Photos of Whorlton Bridge, then and now. Built 193 years ago the bridge is being carefully dismantled so it can be repaired. It has been fascinating to record the original structure which is one of the UK’s oldest road suspension bridges with the deck totally supported by its original iron chains.

It was a great pleasure to take part in a packed conference in Ambleside this month celebrating the archaeology of the Lake District National Park (photo shows our geophysical survey of Swinside Stone Circle)

On Saturday November 9 history enthusiasts gathered in Ambleside for a one-day Archaeology Conference that brought the Lake District’s rich past to life.

With 131 attendees, inspiring talks from experts and volunteers, and fascinating discoveries, it was a day to remember!

From Neolithic axe roughouts to uncovering King Arthur’s Round Table, the event showcased the incredible work happening in our landscape.
