Turns out I wasn’t as prepared as I thought when I started out.

It felt overwhelming, like a cottage industry all its own - and that activity just died.

This year I changed my approach.

Swipe through for what’s different, and yes, these are patterns I see constantly, in my own practice, with clients, and with people I network with.

You’re not alone in any of it.

Curiosity is underrated. 👀

We spend so much time thinking about what we’re going to say next that we forget to truly listen.

But when you’re genuinely curious, conversations change. You notice when someone says “I’m fine” and doesn’t quite mean it. You remember the details they shared weeks ago. You make people feel seen… and that’s powerful!

The opposite is just as powerful. When we’re not curious, we make assumptions. We miss what someone actually needs. And in business, we risk offering solutions to problems people don’t even have.

It’s not about being nosey. It’s about caring enough to understand.

I wrote a longer version of this over on LinkedIn today, if you fancy the full read (link in bio).

👇 What’s one question you wish people asked you more often?

Stay curious you lovely people!

Do you know 30 places other people would love to discover?

They could be 30 lochs, castles, beaches, walks, restaurants, cafés, family days out or hidden gems in your area.

We are looking for enthusiastic people to become 30 Squares Creators and turn their favourite places into an Explorer Trail.

You choose the theme and the 30 locations. We provide the platform, tools and support to help bring the trail to life.

It’s a chance to:

• share places you genuinely love
• encourage people to explore somewhere new
• support local businesses and attractions
• earn rewards from the trails you create

You do not need to be a professional writer or tour guide. You simply need local knowledge, enthusiasm and a great idea.

30 places. One incredible trail. Yours to create.

August feels quiet. That’s not a problem… it’s an opportunity.

5 ways to use this month to grow, without doing more.

Fewer meetings.
Slower inboxes.
No one chasing you for a decision by 5pm.
That’s not a lull… that’s headspace.

Use it to step back and work on your business, not just in it.

How AVBS helps:
This is exactly the space I sit in with clients… a calm, structured sounding board for the “on the business” thinking that never happens when you’re heads-down in delivery.

Not everything that feels productive is actually moving the needle.

This month, ask one honest question: what’s the single number that actually predicts your revenue?

Track that.

Drop the vanity metrics that don’t.

How AVBS helps:
I’m not an accountant and this isn’t about the books. It’s about helping you see clearly which activities are actually working, so effort goes where it counts.

Pricing. A hire. A service you’ve outgrown.

Most business owners are carrying one unresolved call that’s quietly draining energy all year.

August is quiet enough to finally make it.

How AVBS helps:
This is where a thinking partner earns their keep. Someone outside the day-to-day who can help you weigh the decision properly instead of carrying it alone.

Autumn always arrives faster than expected, and busier.

A few honest reconnections now, before the noise starts, pay off when things pick up.

How AVBS helps:
Business development support is a core part of what I do. From warm-list planning and tracking to outreach. A task that can fall to the bottom of the list.

Burnout in September is often seeded by a summer spent “topping up” instead of truly stopping.

Rest isn’t the opposite of growth… sometimes it’s the condition for it. Like plants need water to thrive.

How AVBS helps:
Part of my role as a strategic partner is holding the bigger picture so you don’t have to carry it every day… including giving yourself permission to properly switch off.

Pick one.
Just one.
That could be enough for August and will still help move your business forward.

5 Things Small Businesses Should Be Doing in July

Summer slows things down for a lot of industries, which makes July one of the best months to catch up, plan ahead, and set the second half of the year up properly.

Here are five things worth putting on your to-do list this month.

1. Take stock of your goals so far

Six months in is enough time to see what’s actually working. Look back at the goals you set in January. Which ones are on track, which have quietly slipped, and which don’t make sense anymore given how the year’s gone? July is a good moment to step back before autumn planning kicks in.

How AVBS can help: We can help you structure that review, pulling together a clear picture of progress against your goals, organising the information you need to make decisions, and working through priorities for the second half of the year. Think of it as a sounding board and extra pair of hands for the planning, not the numbers.

2. Get ahead of your Self Assessment payment on account

If you’re a sole trader or in a partnership, 31 July is the deadline for your second Self Assessment payment on account. Missing it means interest charges from HMRC, an easy thing to avoid with a bit of forward planning.

How AVBS can help: We can track deadlines like this for you, prep the paperwork in advance, and make sure nothing slips through the cracks.

3. Plan a summer marketing push (or your autumn one)

Some businesses see a summer lull; others get a seasonal spike. Either way, July is the month to plan what’s next, whether that’s a summer offer to fill the quiet patch or content and campaigns queued up ready for the September rush.

How AVBS can help: From scheduling social posts to drafting email campaigns and researching what’s working for competitors, we can take the marketing admin off your plate so you can focus on strategy.

4. Sort out holiday cover

With staff (and you) taking summer leave, it’s worth mapping out who’s covering what. Nothing damages customer trust like unanswered emails or missed calls during peak holiday season.

How AVBS can help: This is exactly what virtual support is built for. Inbox management, call handling, and diary management so your

You celebrate strangers.
You cheer on influencers.
You engage with creators you’ve never met.

So why not the person you actually know who’s trying to build something?

The reality is that most small businesses don’t need everyone to buy from them.

They need people to notice them.

A like.
A comment.
A save.
A share.
An introduction.

None of those cost a penny.

But each one helps their content reach more people and reminds them that someone believes in what they’re building.

The next time you see a friend showing up online, don’t just scroll past.

Your free support could be worth more than you realise.

Have a great day!
