In 1987 aged 15, I was fortunate to be placed with a manufacturing company called Entec (Pollution Control) Ltd on my work experience from school in Andover, Hampshire. That’s me on the left of the picture below looking somewhat bewildered at the strange looking large tanks and wondering why I didn’t choose a nice clean office to fill the next two weeks of my life! It turned out to be the best decision I made, the company was run by an amazing group of passionate people with a proper ‘open door’ policy, everybody was encouraged to be involved in helping the company grow. I was the first work experience student they had taken and I obviously made an impression as they invited me back during my summer holidays that same year. They went on to offer me an apprenticeship when I left school combined with supporting me through college on a day release programme to obtain my A-Levels and a BTEC. British Water Accredited Engineer

After 3 months training in each department including factory floor, engineering, accounts and transport, I found my true vocation, sales! Aged 19, I was promoted to the position of Sales Office Manager, then a further two years later, I was let loose to cover the Hampshire area as a Sales Representative and then for the next 10 years the whole of the South East, working with home owners, their Architects and Contractors and then finally as a specialist installer myself, offering a complete turn-key solution, from initial drainage layout design, installation and then ongoing maintenance as a British Water Accredited Engineer. Using all the experiences I have acquired over the last 30 years enables me to help and advise people in any given situation, no matter what. From a single house to a large hotel complex, I have the experience to advise all types of clients on all aspects of current legislation, product specification, installation and maintenance.

A new sewage treatment plant has arrived on site, ready for another Ward Environmental Services installation! 🚛

This Clenviro Matrix Sewage Treatment Plant will replace an existing septic tank serving three cottages, where the current system has a non-compliant overflow into a watercourse.

It’s a good example of why it’s important to understand whether an existing off-mains drainage system meets current requirements, particularly when several properties share the same system.

Our team will be installing the new treatment plant as part of the work to address the existing drainage arrangements, and we’ll share more photos as the project progresses.

With potential flooding in the garden, Catherine called us in to raise the blower box and help protect it from the risk of water.

What does your roof water have to do with your foul drainage? More than you might think on an older property. 🏡

On some older houses, rainwater from the roof is combined with the foul drainage system. As part of bringing the drainage up to current requirements, the two need to be separated.

Here, our team has installed a new rainwater soakaway, allowing the roof water to be dealt with separately from the foul drainage.

It’s another example of why off-mains drainage work isn’t always simply a case of replacing a septic tank. The wider drainage system needs to be considered too.

Following our acquisition of Country Drainage earlier this year, we’ve been working to bring the two businesses together while continuing to build on the reputation and experience Country Drainage has established over the last 40 years. Seeing the name on a WES van makes that next chapter feel very real.

One day the WES team can be working at a private home, carefully installing an off-mains drainage solution within an established property.

What were the Ward Environmental Services Team up to here?

Well, they were replacing a non-compliant septic tank with a Klargester Water Management Solutions BioDisc sewage treatment plant, providing the property with a compliant, reliable and long-term off-mains drainage solution. 👌
