🧘‍♂️ Global Wellness Day: Why employee wellbeing is now a business risk management issue.

Recent data reveals that workplace stress-related absence costs the average UK business £1,300 per employee annually, with high-stress sectors seeing losses hit £2,500 per worker. According to the latest Health and Safety Executive report, an unprecedented 22.1 million working days were lost over the past year due to work-related stress, depression or anxiety.

For an SME, losing even a single team member to long-term stress absence disrupts service delivery, impacts customer satisfaction and directly drains profitability. With the recent wave of UK employment law reforms, workplace wellbeing has evolved from a general HR policy into a core compliance and tribunal liability issue.

Good wellbeing is simply good business. When you support your people properly, you protect your profits, productivity and reputation.

At SME Advisor Ltd, we help businesses turn wellbeing into practical and commercial action through a four-pillar framework:

- HR Support: Implementing clear policies, fair processes, structured absence management and effective wellbeing conversations.

- Health and Safety: Executing workplace stress assessments, robust risk management and safe systems of work.

- Leadership Support: Equipping managers to lead teams with clarity, confidence, accountability and empathy.

- Culture and Performance: Structuring working environments that actively drive engagement, retention and productivity.

Don't wait for a costly operational bottleneck or a tribunal claim to address burnout.

📊 SME Owners: How compliant is your business right now?

The employment law reforms that launched this April completely transformed day-to-day HR practices across the UK. From day-one statutory rights for sick pay and family leave to strict new tracking rules, the compliance benchmark for small businesses has never been higher.

We are benchmarking how UK SMEs are navigating these changes this quarter. If you are operating with pre-April employee contracts or out-of-date staff handbooks, your business is carrying a high legal and tribunal risk.

For many small businesses HR responsibilities grow faster than expected.

What starts as a small team quickly brings questions around contracts, policies, performance management, employment law, and handling sensitive employee issues.

But hiring a full-time HR professional isn’t always practical for an SME.

At the same time, getting HR wrong can carry significant risk - from employee disputes to costly tribunal claims especially with the new Employment Act laws updating monthly for 2026-2027.

If you’re looking to access experienced HR guidance when you need it, without the cost of employing a full-time specialist we can help with:

• Handling employee relations issues
• Keeping contracts and policies up-to-date
• Managing disciplinary or grievance processes
• Staying compliant with changing employment legislation
• Getting practical advice before situations escalate

We’re here to give you peace of mind that you have the right level of expertise at the right time - and that can make running a growing business a lot easier.

Workplace Health & Safety isn’t only about physical risks anymore.

For UK businesses, mental health and wellbeing are increasingly recognised as a key part of workplace safety.

If your business has five or more employees, it is already a legal requirement to document risk assessments that address stress and psychological hazards as part of your Health & Safety processes.

What’s changing is the level of scrutiny.

The HSE is increasingly focusing on whether these assessments are ‘live’ documents - meaning they are actively reviewed and updated, not created once and forgotten.

This includes considering factors such as:

• Excessive workload
• Burnout and pressure
• Workplace relationships
• Role clarity
• Organisational change

We know that for many SMEs, the challenge isn’t a lack of care - it’s simply not knowing where to start or having the time to think about it.

This mental health awareness week is a good opportunity for business owners to ask:

Are we actively managing the pressures our team face at work and are we compliant with the documentation for it?

Because protecting your team’s wellbeing is increasingly part of protecting your business too.

No Falls Week continues to highlight the serious risks associated with working at height and recent HSE prosecutions show why businesses cannot afford to become complacent.

The HSE has recently shared details of incidents involving:
• a worker falling through an unguarded loft hatch
• a worker seriously injured after falling through a stairwell opening

(scroll the the bottom for article links)

Both cases reinforce the importance of:

✔ proper planning
✔ risk assessments
✔ staff training
✔ supervision
✔ suitable safety controls

Falls from height remain one of the leading causes of workplace fatalities across the UK, despite many incidents being entirely preventable.

The No Falls Foundation has made a range of free resources available to help businesses review procedures and improve awareness across the workplace.

At SME Advisor we know that effective health & safety management is not just about reacting to incidents, it's about building systems that help prevent them in the first place - if you want help making sure your employees and your business is protected our team is here to help.

Running a small business often means wearing a lot of hats.

But HR and Health & Safety are two areas where getting it wrong can be costly.

Most SMEs don’t need, or can’t justify, hiring full-time specialists in these areas.

At the same time, they can’t afford to ignore them.

That’s where we come in.

We help businesses understand where they currently stand, create a clear roadmap, and put the right processes in place. From there, you can implement internally or lean on our team whenever support is needed.

Either way, you know your business - and your people - are properly protected.

We’re proud to support businesses not just with Health & Safety, but also with the people side of running a company.

For many organisations, HR and compliance can quickly become complex - especially as teams grow.
That’s where having the right support in place makes a real difference.

In the next couple of posts, we’ll share more about how we help SMEs navigate HR challenges with confidence.

Getting your Health & Safety processes up to scratch can feel like a big - and often expensive - task.
That’s why we start with an assessment first.

Before you spend anything on implementation, you’ll understand:

• What’s critical and what can wait
• What improvements are needed
• What it’s likely to cost
• What ‘good’ actually looks like for your business

From there, the final stages of our Health & Safety Roadmap can be implemented in whatever way works best for you - by your internal team, with our support, or a combination of both.

Our goal is simple:

To help your team operate in a safe environment and give you confidence if the Health and Safety Executive ever carries out an inspection.

If you’d like to understand where your business currently stands, speak with our team to get started.
