Is Your Business Ready for September?

September often feels like a second New Year for businesses.

Teams return from annual leave, projects ramp up and many businesses start planning for the final quarter, if not the new year.

Before everything gets busy again, take 30 minutes to ask yourself:

✔️Do our contracts and policies still reflect the business?

✔️Have we identified any health & safety risks?
✔️What do we want the business to achieve before the end of the year?

The businesses that finish the year strongly usually don't leave planning until September; they use August to get organised.

Health & Safety isn't about ticking boxes. It's about preventing the moment that everyone hopes never happens.

Last year, we carried out Health & Safety inspections and Fire Risk Assessments for a premium retail business.

Our reports identified several improvements that would reduce risk to both customers and staff.

✔️Recommendations were provided.
✔️Follow-up support was offered.
✔️Reminders were sent.

Unfortunately, many of those actions weren't completed.

Then an accident happened.

A young child was injured while visiting one of the stores. The incident triggered an inspection by the local authority, resulting in an Improvement Notice requiring safety improvements within just 14 days.

When inspectors returned, not all of the required actions had been completed.

At that point, the conversation was no longer about recommendations. It became about enforcement - and this isn't an unusual story.

We regularly see businesses invest in professional advice, only for improvements to sit on a to-do list because something more urgent is always competing for attention.

Until there isn't.

The reality is that Health & Safety recommendations aren't about creating paperwork. They're about protecting your employees, your customers, your reputation and ultimately your business.

Because the cost of acting today is almost always lower than the cost of reacting tomorrow.
