The Tetley Workshop & the Tetley Conservation Facility are retiring the large carpet conservation facilities.

Which means retirement for Heather & for the large Studio, however Jonathan and I and our team, hope to continue our practice with smaller rugs & carpets & in situ conservation projects, consultation, preventive & remedial, cleaning & repair.

Part of the decant is about finding new homes for our tapestry frame & large carpet frames as well as Jonathan’s excellent washing tank.
If any one is interested in taking these on, and has the space we would be delighted to hear from you to discuss the potentials.

Looking back, it’s been a really wonderful & exciting career..
I’m pondering on writing it up… it does break the heart a bit.
But mainly with gratitude to the TTW team & our wonderful clients.

On BBC’s Country program this evening, they showed Audley End’s winter clean, which includes the 1780 Axminster carpet in Lord Brabrook’s drawing room, apparently it is oldest carpet in the English Heritage collection.. At some time in the 1990’s it came into our studio for conservation. Along with the usual wear & damage and need for cleaning, it had been painted on the back with a pvc adhesive at one end.. A damagingly treatment occasionally used on old carpets to stop the splits that occur, because the linen wefts deteriorate with age & light, especially in hand knotted Axminster carpets. The PVC adhesive tends also to deteriorate becoming dry and causing more damage.. Fortunately we were able to use a 3 stage receipt developed in the Smithsonian Conservation Laboratory, which was successful. That end of the carpet was then supported onto Linen Holland and the areas missing were couched to the linen etc. it was goo£ to see our old friend on Country File & great to revisit the beautiful Audley End.

Just home from several days working on the Agra Carpet in the Waterloo Chamber at Windsor Castle.
The carpet was reinstated on Wednesday after 2 years of being stored whilst work was undertaken on the veiling of the room.
The carpet measures 80x40ft, so is not easy to move even with knowledge & an expert crew. Especially because it has to be turned to be rolled pile outwards for storage.. happily there was no damage from the rolling, moving & storage, but there were small areas of damage from general use, despite it being covered with a drugget to give free visitor access…
I was pleased to see how well out previous repair treatment has held up, & rather appreciated stitching behind one of the infills I had done in 1996.

The lockdown has affected most businesses but there has been a steady flow of interesting projects coming through the Studio.
We have surveyed collections of carpets, given a stitch in time & rolled the huge Waterloo chamber Agra carpet at Windsor Castle for storage during building work. Managed to successfully remove dye run from a large & beautiful Kashan & infill large areas of moth damage from another, as well as remedial treatment on several smaller rugs. We have also designed our new website. Tetleyworkshop.co.uk, design new wet cleaning bath & reorganise the workshop & developed WFH for different aspects. Interesting how easily we get used to discussions online
