Do not just amend or implement new HR Polices. All staff need to be aware and communicated to in order to help avoid unfair dismissal claims. Claiming that you have a policy in place will not be sufficient in a tribunal claim!

New National Minimum Wage rates effective October 14

The National Minimum Wage rate per hour depends on your age and whether you’re an apprentice - you must be at least school leaving age to get it.

21 and over 18 to 20 Under 18 Apprentice*
2014 (from 1 October) £6.50 £5.13 £3.79 £2.73
2013 (current rate) £6.31 £5.03 £3.72 £2.68

*This rate is for apprentices aged 16 to 18 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. All other apprentices are entitled to the National Minimum Wage for their age.

Military Reservists

At present, when called up, military reservists, are paid by the MOD. Employers are able to claim the additional costs of replacing the reservists, subject to a maximum of £110 per day.

Effective 1st October 2014, in addition to this, small and medium employers (turnover below £25.9m and less than 25 employees) will be able to claim up to £500 for a full month that a reservist is absent from work, pro-rata for parts of a month and for part-time workers.

The last of the recent changes made to the TUPE Regulations has now come into force. This means that employers with less than 10 employees may now directly consult affected employees in cases where there are no existing appropriate representatives and the employer has not invited any affected employees to elect employee representatives.

The government has awarded the contract to provide a new Health and Work Service to Health Management Limited. The service will provide occupational health assessments and assist employees to return to work who have been absent for 4 weeks or more. It will be launched on a phased basis in late 2014 and is expected to be fully up and running by May 2015.
