- Top ups
This is why we are topping up.
Lets talk about why we the SIA In April 2021 raised the standards for licence-linked qualifications for Door Supervisors (DS) and Security Guards (SG). Accredited ‘top-up’ awards were introduced for DS and SG in October 2021.
In the below documentary regarding the Manchester Arena attack, we look at missed opportunities. The key pieces from security throughout the incidents highlight areas in which certain action could have been taken to potentially change the outcome of what happened this horrific day. The SIA introduced mandatory upskilling on the below units.
1. Action Counters Terrorism ACT. - The video details how the security officer Muhammad Agha did not follow Salman Abedi after initially seeing him walk up the stairs or aporoach even after a member of the public expressed concerns. The mandatory inclusion of the ACT modules into the Top up for DS and SG teaches how to pick up on reconnaissance and act to create a deterent. Understanding the best approach when something just doesn't look or feel right. What action security could have taken to deter the terrorist.
2. Use of Equipment - It clearly shows that security officer Kyle Lawler attempted several times to reach the control room to report Salman Abedi and eventually gave up. We now have to evidence basic skills of successfully sending and receiving radio transmissions.
3. Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) - The ability to provide life saving treatment when or if the time comes.
4. Conflict Management and Physical Intervention - The methods used to safely de-escalate or reduce risk when it presents itself.
My point being... I know for alot of security they feel as though the top up is a waste of time or too much hasstle. We need to have standardisation within our industry. Since the Private Security Act 2001, the introduction of licensing up until April 2021, we have never had to audit our skills. We owe it to the public that every security officer understands fundamental processes to keep people safe and how to follow them. This is the only way we can better the industry.
