Ashwell Archaeology has been out and about, digging in Cambridge this week. There is an open day at Eddington, this Saturday and you can visit the site. Search for Eddington at opencambridge. Well worth having a look at the Roman remains.

Tomorrow afternoon, as part of Ashwell 1100 and the 2017 Festival of Archaeology we will be hosting some activities in the Museum between 2.30 and 5pm.
There will be craft activities for children (of all ages!) and a quiz, and an opportunity to see some of the historical displays that went up for Ashwell at Home.
Free entry, no refreshments in the Museum, but just up the road the URC are hosting Saturday teas to raise much needed funds for their chapel repairs.

Henge visit tonight 6pm

We took several classes from Ashwell School to visit the Henge last week. The archaeologists had been given an extension for at least another week (from the middle of last week) to take out more of the ditch fill around the henge monument, and to explore the area between the henge and the line of Ashwell Street. They will be working tomorrow, Tuesday, and have kindly said that if I want to show another group round, I can. The archaeologists themselves will not be there, but I have some photographs and lots of information to share. If you can come, meet at the gateway onto the site (just along Ashwell Street, (the Ruddery) opposite where David Short keeps his sheep, at 6pm. Wear sensible shoes, as there is a lot of dog poo and it could also be muddy.
Long term we are hoping the finds and photographs will come to the Museum. The team from Oxford East Archaeology unit have been extremely helpful and generous with their time, but we need to persuade the developers that the village should have the finds!

We have been given permission to visit the dig at the Walkdens building site, and have a guided tour at 6pm on Wednesday 13th May. Meet outside the gate which is just along Ashwell Street, opposite the Philospher's Gate building site. The team from Oxford East are staying after work to give us a tour, which is very kind of them. What was thought to have been a burial mound has turned into a causewayed enclosure, or henge monument, which is very exciting. We can discuss the importance of the site, and possible links with the Norton Henge on Wednesday. If the weather forecast is dreadful, look out for other announcements on Wednesday.

Come and find us today Sunday 10th May, in the garden of the Bushel and Strike pub, near the Church. We will be digging a test pit and seeing what pub archaeology we can find. Lots of other things to do and see, the Secrets of Ashwell!! 11-5 today. Ashwell at Home
