Have you subscribed to my podcast YOUR HOME. THEIR WORKPLACE? We’re editing the May episode that will be published at the end of the month. If you, or someone you know, employs care staff at home, you won’t want to miss hearing what are the ‘must haves’ and ‘nice to haves’. The link in the comments will take you to previous episodes. In fact, much of this information applies to any small business too.

In the meantime, I’m sharing the photo of this beautiful sight of red roses that greeted me yesterday when we returned home from the weekend away in the Peak District. Only on Friday morning I looked out into the garden and marvelled at the many buds I could see of the climbing rose.

This year brings about many changes to employment law. At the time of recording this episode of YOUR HOME. THEIR WORKPLACE. I know that HR providers have been busy updating contracts, policies and procedures, and making managers aware of what is already in force and what is to come. Rather than wait till the end of the month, the March episode of YOUR HOME. THEIR WORKPLACE. is now published.

In this episode, I am joined by specialist employment solicitor and mediator Marc Jones where we discuss significant employment law changes. If not done so already, do talk with your HR provider to ensure contracts, policies and procedures and practical management is in place. Managing people well is so important so that employment costs don’t spiral.

Marc explains how these reforms will affect employers and outlines key updates including day-one rights to statutory sick pay, changes to paternity and parental leave eligibility, also new protections around sexual harassment and whistleblowing, and the creation of the Fair Work Agency to strengthen workplace enforcement. The conversation also covers expanded flexible working rights, new bereavement leave provisions, and the reduction of the qualifying period for unfair dismissal claims from two years to six months. Marc highlights the importance of preparing early by reviewing employment contracts, updating workplace policies, and ensuring managers understand the upcoming changes.

A link to the episode of YOUR HOME. THEIR WORKPLACE. is in the comments below and the podcast can be found on Spotify, Apple Podcast and other podcast platforms.

What topics would you like me to cover in future podcast episodes? I’d love to hear from you.

I chat with employment law solicitor Marc Jones about some of the the 2026/27 changes to employment law that matter for care staff employers in the soon to be published episode of my podcast YOUR HOME. THEIR WORKPLACE. Some changes have already come into force, whilst others take effect from April. Some of the changes mean that employees’ rights start from DAY ONE of their employment, rather than a “waiting or qualifying” period.

If you employ care staff in your home, how up to date are your policies and procedures? Do your employment contracts reflect what happens in practice, and the changes to the law in force? Speak to your HR support for advice sooner rather than later as changes affect SSP, family friendly rights besides others.

Read Employing Care Staff in Your Home for tips on day-to-day employment practices. It is not meant to be a legal ‘bible’ but a practical tool. It’s in paperback, e-book or listen to the audiobook. If you’re struggling to buy a paperback copy, do message me as I have some stock.

YOUR HOME, THEIR WORKPLACE - Season 2, Episode 7 is published. In this episode, I sit down with Janet Shreeve, Director of Shreeve Care Services, to explore the realities, challenges, and rewards of live-in care — a personalised alternative to care homes that helps people remain in the comfort of their own homes.

Learn about:
• What live-in care means and how it differs from traditional care models

• The benefits of staying at home for both clients and families

• Overcoming common misconceptions and resistance around having a carer live in

• How clients are matched with carers — and why compatibility and companionship
matter

• The process from initial consultation to setting up care with trusted partners

• Managing breaks, shifts, and maintaining healthy work-life balance for carers

• Why awareness and advocacy are key to making live-in care a recognised,
accessible option.

Live-in care is not just about support — it’s about choice, comfort, and connection. Janet
emphasises that the heart of good care lies in trust, respect, and understanding each
person’s individuality.

Listen in for practical insights, warm storytelling, and a behind-the-scenes look at how
live-in care truly transforms lives.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Kate Marston ACIPD of People Support on my podcast YOUR HOME. THEIR WORKPLACE. about the importance of good investigation practice. As a member of a very active HR independent group, I’ve heard from a number of HR professionals who attended Kate’s training course and who highly recommend it. Anyone employing people must know how to manage - if and when there is conflict, or if things ‘go wrong’ - or know who to call on for help.

If you are an individual, a family member, a case manager, who employs or manages care staff in the home, here’s the podcast episode if you’ve not heard it before.

The next episode of YOUR HOME. THEIR WORKPLACE. will be published at the end of next week. Don’t miss my chat with Janet Shreeve specifically about live-in care.

People often tell me, “You must have so much patience to do that kind of work.” They say it with a soft voice and a little head tilt. I know they mean it as a compliment, but they’ve got it wrong.

Patience is what you use when you’re waiting in line at the supermarket and the person ahead of you is paying in pennies. Patience is what you summon when your Wi-Fi goes down. Patience is about waiting for something to end.

Support work isn’t about waiting. It’s about being, being present, being responsive, being humble enough to realize that you’re not the main character in someone else’s story.

The idea that good support work is rooted in patience sells both the worker and the person they support short. It makes it sound like we’re enduring something, like the person with a disability is a test of our goodness.

The best support workers I’ve met don’t have halos of patience hovering over their heads. They have skills. They know how to listen beyond words. They notice tiny details, a shift in tone, a glance, a pause... and they adjust. They can turn frustration into collaboration. They know how to make space for someone’s independence without stepping in to “fix” everything.

Patience says, “I’ll wait for you to catch up.”
Good support says, “I’ll walk with you, at your pace, and learn the rhythm of your stride.”

So no, disability support work doesn’t take patience. It takes respect. It takes skill.
