Since 1968, Loudoun Hall, built in the late 1400s and Ayr’s oldest building and almost unique in Scotland, had been leased from its owners, the Loudoun Hall Trust, by the local authority (presently South Ayrshire Council). The Council gave notice in mid-2025 that they would end their lease in May 2026. Over the past twelve months, the Trustees have considered carefully the many options available to them, and have agreed that the best result for the building would be transfer to a local company with a proven record in the management and care of the town’s historic buildings.
At a ceremony at the Hall on Friday (7th August), the chairman of the Trustees, Sir Adam Fergusson, said “the last few months have been difficult for the Trustees, with many options open to us, but we firmly believe that the WMA Group will prove to be beneficial owners of Loudoun Hall, and will ensure that it continues to play a key role in Ayr. It has been a sleeping beauty for some years now: we believe that the new owners will waken it from its slumbers.” Brian Williamson, Managing Director of the WMA Group, said:
“I have long believed that historic buildings have a crucial role to play in both the economy and community of Ayr. Throughout my career I have been committed to preserving and repurposing important buildings, as demonstrated by projects in Alloway Place, Wellington Square and River Street. As Chairman of Ayr Rugby Club, I have also been privileged to lead the £5 million redevelopment of Millbrae, transforming it into one of Scotland’s leading community sports facilities. These projects have shown how investment in heritage and community assets can create lasting benefits for local people. We are honoured that the Trustees have entrusted us with the future of Loudoun Hall, and we are committed to ensuring this remarkable building once again becomes a vibrant part of Ayr’s cultural and community life for generations to come.”
