Following our recent archaeological work supporting Leicestershire County Council, AECOM and Galliford Try for the building of the North and East Melton Mowbray Distributor Road, it has now been officially opened and named – and we were present to talk about the excavations and what we discovered!

The opening of the new ‘Pork Pie Way’ was attended by dignitaries, the Local Authority, the construction team at Galliford Try, and the local community, who gathered to find out more about this important infrastructure project. The Minister for Roads and Buses, Simon Lightwood MP, was in attendance to formally open the road, and he was joined by the Mayor of Melton Mowbray, leader of Leicestershire County Council, the town’s MP, councillors and others. The media from television to radio to newspapers were also very engaged and recorded the event.

Meanwhile, Jenny and Rob from our team were manning the stand at this opening to discuss the archaeological works in advance of construction, as well as show finds, and talk people through the information posters and reconstruction graphics for the site.

Overall, the event was a huge success, and we were pleased to be there to support our client, Galliford Try, in celebrating the opening of the new relief road.

It’s not quite a ‘Finds’ Friday, but today we want to share this fascinating journey of exploration into one of the most famous archaeological wonders of the world: Stonehenge!

Five years ago, archaeologist and filmmaker Julian Richards was granted ‘access all areas’ and three uninterrupted filming days inside Stonehenge - and now the first part of the film is available online. Check it out below:

In exciting news, The Gefrin Trust has acquired the lease on the Maelmin Heritage Trail in Northumberland. This development will unite the management of Maelmin with its Royal Anglo-Saxon sister site of Ad Gefrin at Yeavering – allowing for improved visitor experience and more opportunities to showcase the stunning archaeology and history of the region.

Our MD, Clive Waddington, set up the free access Maelmin Heritage Trail with co-founder Peter Forrester, formally opening 26 years ago in 2000. It’s located in Milfield, the site of a major Anglo-Saxon palace identified through aerial photography. According to the historian Bede, Maelmin was the successor royal Northumbrian palace to the one at Ad Gefrin, and both feature in his account of the development of the great early medieval kingdom of Northumbria.

Not yet excavated, the Maelmin palace is right next to the Trail and is in the middle of the wider Till Valley or ‘Milfield Basin’, which forms a focus for hundreds of earlier archaeological sites that document human settlement right back to the end of the last Ice Age around 12,000 years ago. There is also a memorial that has been set up at Maelmin to the RAF and Canadian Air Force servicemen based at RAF Milfield (immediately next to the Trail site) who lost their lives in the Second World War. The Trail documents the long history of this amazing landscape; however, it is in need of an upgrade and repairs, and by bringing it into the Gefrin Trust the site’s future is secured.

While the much-loved Trail and associated reconstructions have been deteriorating over the last few years, the Gefrin Trust – working with the Parish Council – will now restore everything to its former glory and intends to update the accompanying explanatory materials for the 10,000 plus visitors it attracts each year.

Three of our papers are now available to view from “The World’s Heritage in the Digital Age: New Technologies Towards Sustainable Research, Conservation and Communication” conference in Vienna 2021.

All three of our papers in this monograph discuss aspects of our award-winning Landscape Prospection Service techniques in action, covering geoarchaeological mapping, geochemical survey and magnetic susceptibility, and the use of high-resolution LiDAR and multispectral UAV surveys with reference to real world case studies.

You can find the free e-monograph on the Vienna conference website here:

In exciting news, we have a couple of articles in the latest edition of Current Archaeology magazine!

The April issue features a piece talking about the key findings from our work at Milton, Cambridgeshire, which has now been published in full. It also includes a short article on our recent work at Harden Quarry, Northumberland, which has brought to life a near complete view of Bronze Age activity in this area.

You can find Issue 433 at the Current Archaeology website here:

It has been a particularly busy few weeks at CA, with visits to Nottingham and Carlisle and, of course, our annual conference – huge thanks to everyone who came along! This month’s cover feature takes us to Broughton Lodge in Nottinghamshire, where one of the county’s richest and most unusual ...

Following on from our excavation of a prehistoric cemetery in Northumberland in September last year, we returned recently to complete the topsoil stripping and encountered a further three graves! These additional graves continued the southeast to northwest line of four that was found previously, and each contained a ring of stones which would have surrounded the deceased’s body, as well as a vague ‘shadow’ in the soil where the body had lain, but has since decomposed.

Most interestingly, one of the graves contained an as yet unidentified, metal object. It is roughly cylindrical and measures around 10cm long, but is extremely corroded. Our intention is to identify the type of metal using X-ray fluorescence, before sending the object for x-ray and conservation to help us identify it. Could the object and its intended use shed some light on the people who were buried here? Is it indicative of gender and/or social status?

We’ll provide further updates as we continue with our post-excavation analysis.
