Sometimes, more really is more.

Standing almost like a piece of architecture in its own right, this wonderfully decorative Indian hardwood screen certainly made an impression at Holloways.

Dating from the 20th century, its nine open panels are richly carved with foliate decoration and picked out in deep reds, greens and touches of gold.

Bold, colourful and full of character, it found a new home at an impressive £640 hammer price.

Proof that there is still a place at auction for statement pieces that are anything but ordinary.

What makes an old painting valuable? 🎨

Age alone isn’t always the answer.

This wonderful oil by British artist Edward Robert Smythe (1810–1899) depicts a group of foxhounds gathered in their lodge beside the huntsman’s coat.

It’s full of character, beautifully observed and, importantly, it’s a subject collectors wanted.

Guided at £300 to £400, competition in the saleroom took it to an impressive £1,600 hammer price. 🔨

A lovely example of what can happen when quality, subject and strong demand come together at auction.

Small pieces. Serious competition.

An interesting little collection of ceramics certainly caught the eye of bidders at Holloways.

Lot 88 included a Prattware cylindrical pot depicting The Fall of Sebastopol, two further Prattware pots, a Victorian Crosse & Blackwell mustard pot and a Musselburgh Arms Hotel ironstone plate.

What followed was exactly what makes an auction so exciting. Strong interest and determined bidding saw the lot finally come down at an impressive £1,250 hammer price.

Sometimes it takes the auction room to reveal just how much collectors are prepared to pay.

These rather handsome early 20th century Fielding, Sheffield straight razors, with tortoiseshell handles and white metal mounts, proved there’s still plenty of appetite for beautifully made objects from another age.

Guided at £80 to £100, competition from bidders pushed the pair all the way to an impressive £520 hammer price. 🔨

This beautifully decorated early 20th century Chinese Export bowl depicts the famous Thirteen Factories, the historic trading houses that once lined the waterfront at Canton.

At 26cm across, it arrived at Holloways with an estimate of just £80 to £100.

The bidders had other ideas.

Not quite your everyday piece of Royal Doulton.

This wonderfully unusual early 20th century Pure Milk display bowl, with its generous proportions, twin scroll handles and oval foot, went under the hammer at Holloways for an impressive £1,900.

It’s a lovely reminder that value isn’t always found where you expect it.

A proper cup of tea deserves proper silverware.

Dating from the 1930s, this handsome five piece silver tea and coffee service has that wonderfully elegant Art Deco feel, with demi reeded bodies and contrasting ebonised fittings.

But did you spot the word "matched” in our catalogue description?

In auction terms, a matched service simply means the pieces were brought together rather than all being made as one original set. Look closely at silver services and you’ll often find pieces by different makers or from slightly different dates, chosen because they complement one another beautifully.

Together, these five pieces weigh an impressive 1,750g gross.

We can't promise your tea will taste any better served from silver. But it would certainly look the part.

This 20th Century Gold Sovereign Collection brings together seven gold sovereigns in a fitted presentation case, each carrying the portrait of the monarch of its time.

The sovereign has been part of British coinage for centuries, but the changing royal portraits are what make a collection like this particularly fascinating. Put them together and you can quite literally see history passing from one reign to the next.
