Sorry Austin… we didn’t want your head getting too big!!

Luckily, we could hear you as clear as day - and if you saw our recent video on stud holes you’ll know that it was a great explanation, well done!

What a great day at the Three Counties in Malvern, where Ben completed his second probationary judging appointment alongside five-time World Champion, Billy Crouthers AWCF.

The day featured the Cop Shoeing and open therapeutic class, where competitors had one hour to forge a shoe and shoe a foot, as well as a therapeutic shoemaking class, where they had 55 minutes to make two different specialist shoes.

The standard of work throughout both classes was exceptionally high, making the judging process both challenging and rewarding.

Well done to all the competitors!

A little snippet from a great conversation on the Chatham chat stage during Defender Bramham Horse Trials over the weekend… 🎤

Ben shared his knowledge and discussed the many factors that contribute to keeping our horses performing at their best.

These educational conversations are a great reminder that successful horse care is about collaboration, communication and putting the horse first.

Thanks to for the interview and to everyone who came along to listen and ask questions.

Following one of our recent reels showcasing the many different types of pads, we thought we’d take a minute to explain a little more about how we choose the right one in different situations…

Pads aren’t just protection - they’re a tool that can actively influence how the hoof loads, moves and feels.

The right combination of pad, packing and material can support comfort and function in a really tailored way, but only when it’s chosen with the individual foot in mind.

Getting the stud holes right is a key part of preparing an event horse ahead of competing and here’s a bit of a deep dive into how we make them perfect!

Correct stud hole placement and tapping help ensure studs can be used safely and effectively when needed. Well-prepared holes make it easier to insert and remove studs, reduce the risk of damage to the hole, and ensure consistent performance across different ground conditions.

When studs are correctly fitted and maintained, they support traction and stability, helping the horse feel more secure during the fast, technical phases of eventing where balance and grip really matter.

A seemingly small part of preparation, but an important one in setting horses up for confidence and success.

The power of the plastic bag - or the power of what’s IN the plastic bag more like😋

Our distraction techniques are working a TREAT (pardon the pun!)

Rumour has it this works on humans and dogs too?!

There is a significant correlation between a horse’s hoof length and the intrinsic weight that they carry with a rider onboard.

Understanding this relationship can help horse owners support their horse’s welfare and to reach their potential in performance.

If you would like some additional support or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Before any trimming or shoeing begins, our fundamental first step is to watch the horse move.

This is Malc, an ex-racehorse who comes to the forge for some remedial shoeing.

By seeing the horse walk and trot up and down, subtle imbalances in the rest of the body, that aren’t always obvious when the horse is standing still, can be spotted.

The way a horse lands, tracks up, swings through its shoulders, or loads a limb can tell a farrier a lot about what’s happening in the hoof.

The hoof doesn’t work in isolation - it’s at the base of the entire body. A horse that is compensating for discomfort in one foot may show it through their stride length, posture, shoulder movement, hip action, or even how they carry their head and neck.

Assessing movement helps us identify uneven loading, balance issues, potential discomfort, and areas where corrective trimming or shoeing may improve comfort and performance.

It’s not just about looking at the feet - it’s about understanding how the whole horse moves.
