LET’S BE CONTROVERSIAL 💣

Learning Smarts v Practical Smarts: Which Really Matters in Leadership 🤔

We often hear about the importance of being “book smart’ 📚 - having all those qualifications and certificates. But in the real world, especially in leadership, does that really hold up?

Sure, having a solid EDUCATIONAL background is great. But real leadership is about PRACTICAL smarts - navigating chaos, making quick decisions, and connecting with your team.
There’s plenty to learn here - the foundations but practical will deliver the real growth.

I’ve seen leaders with diplomas who crumble under pressure because they can’t adapt. On the flip side, I’ve worked with people who didn’t have fancy CV’s but excelled because they could read a room, inspire their team and pivot when necessary.

Practical smarts means you’ve MADE MISTAKES - lots of them. It’s about falling down 9 times and standing up 10. This kind of intelligence can’t be taught in a classroom, it is earned through EXPERIENCE, grit, and perseverance 💪🏻.

Learning smarts gets your foot in the door, but practical smarts keeps you in the room and helps you succeed.

So, what do you think?

Are we placing too much emphasis on traditional education in leadership roles? It is time we start valuing real-world experience.

Lessons in Leadership: The Power of Staying True and Humble

🗝️ Authenticity & Humility Lead the Way: In the realm of leadership, AUTHENTICITY and HUMILITY act as your guiding stars. Stay true to yourself, remain humble – these QUALITIES resonate with those you lead.

In my journey as a leader, I've witnessed firsthand the power of these values. Once, a colleague who had initially hired me became a member of my team. The dynamic could have been challenging, but by staying true to myself and showing GENUINE RESPECT and humility, we navigated the transition smoothly.
Instead of asserting dominance, I valued their experience and insights, fostering a COLLABORATIVE environment. This approach not only strengthened our working relationship but also set a positive tone for the rest of the team. Our success was a testament to the strength of authentic leadership.

Conversely, I’ve also experienced the pitfalls of POOR LEADERSHIP. Early in my career, I had a manager who prioritized building a circle of allies over fostering a cohesive team. This exclusionary tactic created a toxic environment, where many felt marginalized and undervalued. The lack of genuine leadership stifled growth and innovation, highlighting how critical it is to lead with authenticity and humility.

These experiences have solidified my belief that true leadership is not about wielding power but about empowering others. Authenticity and humility are not just admirable traits; they are essential to creating an inclusive and dynamic team culture.

Transforming Leadership: From Toxic Traits to Positive Impact 🌟

It's a staggering statistic❗

It highlights a crucial point: self-awareness and genuine leadership go hand in hand.

Throughout my journey as a leader and in coaching new leaders, I've encountered numerous individuals who were unaware of the negative impact they had on their teams.

Here are some habits I’ve found essential to becoming a truly effective leader:

🪞 Self-Reflection
🧡 Empathy
🫂 Humility
🤝🏻 Consistency

I made it a point to ask my team for regular feedback and genuinely listened to their concerns. This not only improves team dynamics but also helps you grow as a leader. It's about creating a culture where everyone feels valued and heard.

Great leaders are those who recognize their shortcomings and strive to improve.

Remember, leadership is not about the title but about the positive impact you have on your team.

Let’s commit to continuous growth and create environments where everyone can thrive. 🌱

People Remember How You Made Them Feel: Leadership Habits to Form ASAP 🌟

One of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned as a leader is that people FORGET what you said or did, but they will ALWAYS remember how you made them FEEL.

This principle has been the cornerstone of my leadership approach and a vital habit for any aspiring leader to cultivate.

Here are a few habits that have significantly impacted my leadership journey:

👂 Active Listening
💚 Empathy
🪞 Recognition
✔️ Consistency
🛠️ Positive Reinforcement

During my career, I’ve seen firsthand how these habits can transform team dynamics.

To all the leaders and future leaders out there: focus on how you make people feel. It's these emotional connections that leave a lasting impact and drive meaningful success.

Why Positivity is More Than Just a Smile: Insights from a Leader
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

As a leader and someone who has had the privilege of coaching new leaders, I've learned that maintaining a positive mindset is crucial, especially during challenging times.

It's a common misconception that positivity equates to constant happiness. In reality, it's about resilience and hope.

I remember during stressful times, feeling overwhelmed, but I also knew that giving up wasn’t an option. Instead of forcing myself to be happy, I focused on the bigger picture and the positive outcomes that were possible. I reminded my team that every tough day was a step closer to success.

This experience taught me a valuable lesson: positivity is about trusting that better days are ahead, even when the present is difficult. It's about showing up with determination, supporting your team, and believing in the potential for growth and improvement.

I always emphasize this: embrace the hard days, learn from them, and let them fuel your drive. The challenges you face are moulding you into a stronger, more resilient leader.

Remember, positivity doesn’t mean avoiding difficulties; it means facing them head-on with the belief that you and your team have the strength to overcome them.

Let’s continue to lead with resilience and optimism. Better days are always on the horizon. 🌈

Leadership traits to AVOID…🛑

It can be tricky when starting your leadership journey. It is natural to try to over engineer your actions.

I’ve always found it’s good to take my steer from a valued mentor and to keep it simple.

Here are my TOP TRAITS to help you AVOID, that lead to uncertainty in your team:

1/ LACK OF RECOGNITION:
Leaders who consistently fail to acknowledge and appreciate the efforts of their team members may inadvertently signal a lack of value for their contributions, leading to demotivation and disengagement.

2/ FAVOURITISM:
Subtle signs of favoritism to certain team members over others, can breed resentment and erode trust within the team.

3/ LACK OF DELEGATION:
While micromanagement is a more overt red flag, a subtler version is a leader's reluctance to delegate tasks or responsibilities, which can indicate a lack of trust in their team's abilities and limit growth opportunities for team members.

4/ POOR LISTENING SKILLS:
Leaders who dominate conversations, interrupt others, or fail to actively listen to their team members may overlook valuable insights and perspectives, hindering effective communication and collaboration.

5/ RESISTANCE TO CHANGE:
Subtle resistance to change, such as dismissing new ideas or initiatives without thorough consideration, can signal a leader's unwillingness to adapt to evolving circumstances or embrace innovation, potentially stagnating progress within the team or organization.

Essentially, if you DO the REVERSE of all these traits, you are onto something brilliant.

Unveiling Leadership Insights: Direct Questions and Authentic Responses 🌟

I asked a fellow leader this question:

"I’m curious, in your leadership role, do you ever feel the weight of unmet targets and an overwhelming blame culture?"

This was their response…

"I think in any role unmet targets can feel difficult, but more often for those trying to achieve it. All people are different and targets can be used generically and individually and in different ways. I ran a business for a good number of years without targets and outperformed our industry sector through inspiring a self-motivated team. As ever nothing stays the same and now goals are being introduced again as cultures change along with leadership ability. I was LUCKY enough to build the ultimate team but as we succeed ourselves including myself the perpetual cycle can lead to a different subset. It is my job and the job of all the team to ensure we adapt to the best cultural fit." 🔄

How great is that response? It demonstrates the power of ADAPTIVE leadership and the importance of fostering a SELF-MOTIVATED team culture. 🚀

Busting leadership myths #5:

IS IT ALWAYS TRUE that leaders should maintain a strict hierarchy and distance from their team❓

Not necessarily…

While some level of hierarchy may be necessary in certain situations, overly rigid structures can hinder communication, collaboration, and innovation. Effective leaders often maintain an approachable demeanor and build strong relationships with their teams.💪🏼

I've found that embracing a more open and collaborative leadership style not only fosters trust and respect but also encourages creativity and problem-solving among team members.🤝🏻

Let's challenge these common leadership myths and embrace a more inclusive approach to leadership that values connection and collaboration.

Together, we can create environments where everyone feels empowered to contribute their best work.

Honoring Past Leaders and Encouraging Future Ones 🚀

Employing new team members? Remember you are also on audition.

Reflecting on my own journey, I owe a debt of gratitude to the leaders who've shaped my career path. 🙏

From the mentors who saw potential in me during my early days to the seasoned professionals whose guidance steered me through complex challenges, each one left an indelible mark on my approach to leadership.

Their ability to INSPIRE wasn't confined to the workplace; it extended to every interaction, leaving a LASTING IMPRESSION that went beyond professional duties.

So, to all those leaders who believed in me, thank you 🫂. Your influence has been invaluable, and it's a reminder of the PROFOUND IMPACT leaders can have on those they lead.

As I navigate my own leadership journey and coach new leaders, I'm reminded of the RESPONSIBILITY we carry not just to manage tasks, but to inspire and uplift those around us.

Even in an interview process, leaders have the opportunity to ignite sparks of inspiration in potential team members. It's about more than just discussing job responsibilities; it's about painting a VISION of what's possible, fostering an environment of trust and growth, and demonstrating a genuine commitment to seeing others succeed. 📈

So, to my fellow leaders, let's remember the PRIVILEGE we have in shaping the careers and aspirations of those we lead, starting from the very first encounter.

Let's be the kind of leaders who not only earn respect but inspire admiration and LOYALTY, propelling our teams to greatness together.
